An american kestrel in our yard. I have seen her twice in the last week. Once on the birdbath. Once on a feeder. By the time I get the camera she is gone.
She obviously is picking out our birds. Circle of life. After reading up I find they prefer sparrows, starlings, and doves. We have plenty of those to spare. A lot of info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_kestrel
We are going to put up the automated birdcam and hope for a good photo or two in the weeks to come.
We also saw a woodpecker checking out a tree for a home in our direct line of vision. That could make for family photos this summer if a pair move in.

This is what she looks like.
There is probably a male too.

(14,733 posts)Probably because we have lots of sparrows, starlings, and mourning doves ourselves. It's fine when they finish their meal, but annoying when they leave half and I have to chase a dog that's found part of a body and have to get it away from them.
We've had several woodpeckers of late as well.

(99,653 posts)Once a hawk was eating dinner while we were. Our dinning room has a glass wall that faces the back yard feeders etc. This dove lands next to the hawk. Once it realized what was going on, I never saw a dove at light speed before.

(34,136 posts)On the side with the most bird feeders. This week they've been making a lot of noise - they might be breeding.
When we were running the farm the adult pair would bring their fledglings to sit on the fence next to the barn in the mornings. When arrived to feed, the birds nesting in the rafters would fly out and the hawks would stoop on them.
Also, when we first bought this place and the fields were all in abandoned corn, red tail hawks would hang out as I went round and round the fields on the tractor mowing down the corn and weeds. As I got to the last lines of stubble, the cotton rats would run out and the hawks ate well. Since we never let the fields get that overgrown again, the red tails moved on to other hunting grounds and the red shoulders moved in.

(1,656 posts)You are lucky to live in a area with all these cool birds.
Your profile does state where you live so I'll understand if you do not answer.
Even a general location would be great.
