Stuart Rothenberg examined the shift in the battle for control of the Senate:
Up to this point, the burden of proof has been on Democrats to demonstrate that they can oust four or five Republican senators and win control of the chamber. But now, with Republicans in disarray and the party flirting with selecting a weak general election nominee, the benefit of the doubt has shifted away from the GOP and to the Democrats.
.
At least five incumbent GOP senators from Democratic-leaning or competitive states were facing difficult re-election races this year even under the most favorable circumstances Mark Kirk of Illinois, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Rob Portman of Ohio. A Republican open seat in Florida also looked at great risk.
Add in the deep division within the Republican Party, and the possibility of Trump or Cruz leading the national GOP ticket, and all or at least almost all of those races suddenly look much more uphill. In addition, states like North Carolina, Indiana, Missouri and Arizona look more interesting.

(14,400 posts)the GOP will decide that they better start looking at some Supreme Court nominees?
The closer this gets to reality the further left the next nominee is going to be. Right now they still have some say in the process, not much but some.
If they lose the Senate the next nominee is going to make Ginsburg look like a centrist.

(946 posts)THIS is probably a more important outcome of the election. Unless the GOP is unseated from their thrones of do-nothing in the house and senate, we'll get the same old obstruction and lack of any congressional action for the next 4 years. At this point, I'm sure Truman is apologizing to the 80th congress. "I'm sorry folks, but it appears you're downright industrious compared to the current congress."
We cannot sit home this November. We must get out and vote for any senators or representatives we can. Unless congress changes, nothing will.

(39,215 posts)though gerrymandering has made it impossible to take it back. We can get as many good people as possible in the House every election until the next census. Every little improvement is a step closer to change.

(39,215 posts)if we have real progressives to support in down ticket races. And we need to let others know. I have a list that are connected to Bernie that I am already donating to. Sometimes just young Democratic politicians on the state level.
We need to work on taking the states back also.
state wise too many old pols. have to look and see if anyone new is running, mostly I have been redistricted into a republican district so do not see a lot of progressives here,

I often donate to a candidate more because I want to kick their opponent out than that I know the candidate. For instance I am donating against DWS by donating to her opponent.

Can't flip anything here. Hope it happens in some other states, though.

(29,676 posts)Young, handsome, current Secretary of State, nice looking family, etc. (Doesn't always matter about what he believes-sometimes the looks sell.) Proud Democrat who is ready to help his party and wants to help the people. Currently the youngest statewide elected official in the U.S. (Born in '81.)Oh, and the big one-he served. He was an Army Captain, working military intelligence in Afghanistan. His opponent? Roy Blunt. Blunt received deferment after deferment and it's now biting him in the butt. People like a young, handsome, intelligent man with a pretty and highly intelligent wife, an adorable son and a military background to boot.
He's going to give Blunt a run for his money and it's already fun to watch.
