Letter from Texas: Listen America, Trump Is Just Embarrassing. Cruz Is Scary.
Dear Republicans:
Let me get this straight. You want to take back Donald Trump. You want to take Trump off the table. But you want to give us Ted Cruz instead.
I know youre not totally insane. Your problem is that many of you are not from Texas. You dont really know Ted Cruz. Last week Sen. Lindsey Graham told CNN, Ted and I are in the same party. Donald Trump is an interloper.
Senator Graham, please listen to me. You and Donald Trump are from the same planet. Cruz is the interloper.
snip to the end, lots of good stuff in between:
But, look, the problem with Cruz wont be embarrassment. He means every single word he says. He means what he says about pushing 11 million people back across the Mexican border, about using the government to hound, harry and herd human beings based on their sex lives, about stripping women of their physical autonomy, and about all of the superstitious claptrap that issues from his old mans mouth on evolution, global warming and science itself.
The Ivy League took none of that away from him. He held it dear then and holds it dear now. Its all right there in front of you, not a millimeter beneath the surface. His only bluff is that he shows you less than his full hand, not that he fakes having more.
An orange-faced, thin-skinned, narcissistic, blow-hard clown versus a truly scary, malevolent alien from the dark side. Oh, and before I forget, gee, thanks for the choice. But I gotta go with the clown. I have examined the clown pretty closely, too, and I think I can outrun him. The other guy, Im not so sure.

(58,785 posts)he was also a religious extremist (just a faker was also possible). When my husband was born, he had a bunch of family in Europe. By the end of the war they had all been murdered in the Holocaust. As a result, I always sort of wonder, not if something bad could happen here, but when a potential leader might turn up. To me, Cruz is the most alarming candidate to come along since I've been watching.
On DU, it is also worth noting that, although Nazism was unquestionably an ultraconservative movement, early on "Socialist" was tucked into the party name to also draw in angry, worried people from the far left, who helped elect him initially.
Although all the personalities prone to extremism mercifully normally separate out into disagreeing minority groups, anyone who managed to unite the far right and the far left under a moral mandate, for perhaps 40% or more of the electorate right there, could be extremely dangerous.
Those pictures that always show Hitler ranting like a madman do the world a great disservice. He was also charismatic and charming.

(58,724 posts)Just as this writer says people don't really understand Cruz - I would argue that this writer doesn't really understand Trump.
Trump is definitely more than just embarrassing. He is every bit as scary as Cruz.
Cruz may be a true believer, but Trump is a know-nothing proto-fascist.

(4,832 posts)Trump will do what will make him loved, Cruz will do what he envisions God has ordained him to accomplish.
Right now Trump is at his ego's best with crazed celebrity lovers cheering him on. He has no program, values or plan save aggrandizing himself. He will quickly be subsumed by the GOP and DINOs in Washington. Cruz on the other has shown he is listening to voices in his head, apparently placed there during childhood and will go his own way as he as done during his short career as Senator from Texas.
