Wisconsin Voters Report Receiving Robocalls Telling Them Not To VoteFrom Eau Claire to Beloit, voters across Wisconsin are relaying stories via Twitter, Facebook and online message boards about anonymous robocalls from allies of Scott Walker, telling themincorrectlythat if they signed petitions to recall Governor Walker, their vote in todays crucial election has been recorded.
An NBC reporter tweeted that a family friend was one recipient of the call:
Dad just emailed, a WI friend of his got the 'If you signed the petition you don't have to vote tomorrow' robocall #wirecall
Tom Barrett, the mayor of Milwaukee and the Democratic nominee to unseat Governor Scott Walker, told MSNBC host Ed Schultz last night that his campaign began receiving complaints yesterday that voters had been contacted with the misinformation. This morning, Salon reported on the robocalls too, and included comments from Carol Gibbons, a Wisconsin resident who got the call herself. And a local CBS affiliate is even reporting that the caller sounds eerily similar to Tom Barrett, suggesting the group behind the call may have hired a Barrett impersonator.

(45,274 posts)I hope EVERYONE is paying attention.
This story seems to be getting a lot of coverage, and may just be the last straw for some people who were on the fence about Walker & denying his criminality.

(149,727 posts)I meant I hope nobody will follow those bogus directions!
And I hope you're right about this being the last straw.

(13,776 posts)I don't know the wording of the rule about no campaigning within ___ feet of a polling place, but if someone is persuaded not to vote by answering a phone call, that in effect makes their home a polling place. Probably a dumb idea, but I wonder whether anybody could be prosecuted on that basis--and even if they couldn't, the trial would bring attention to this absolutely contemptible practice.

(59,507 posts)which refers to the physical place you vote. It is considered voter suppression and I think it is illegal if they can identify the origin. This won't invalidate the election. In NH in 2002, the Republicans took the Democrats GOTV operation in Manchester down by having a company from somewhere out of state placing massive numbers of calls to tie up the phone lines. They were charged and convicted and sent to jail - but they may have been the reason Sununu won - and he stayed in office until he lost re-election in a rematch.

(45,274 posts)I don't remember the wording, but there is a statute that outlaws any activities meant to misinform voters & affect their votes.

Will somebody please talk me down? I don't have a good feeling about this election--not a good feeling at all and it's depressing as hell. Could somebody please tell me how wrong I am? If Wisconsin can't bounce Walker, then we don't have a prayer of getting rid of Snyder in Michigan. I just have a horrid feeling Walker is going to win today. ARRRRRRGH!!!

(59,507 posts)while there are editorials backing Walker that partly speak of the normal recourse being defeating someone when they are up for re-election. The fact is there may be some in the middle swayed by the idea that recall should be an exception used if there is provable malfeasance in office - which actually might be proven at some point.
Yet the entire media is pushing this as a predictor for 2012.

(24,331 posts)However, that hardly matters, since by the time that any possible punitive measures can happen, the election is over. That's assuming of course that anything actually happens; plenty of these sorts of things go down without any real accountability. Even if there is a later investigation, fines, etcetera, it's considered part of the cost of victory.

(27,985 posts)She is no longer reporting the summary for county and is required to report ward totals.
We have folks at every polling place at close and are reporting ward totals to a boiler room so we have the county and ward totals before they even get to Kathy.

1. They clinically lie about everything, all the time.
2. They OWN everything, so they rig everything, all the time, & they'll always buy turncoats.
3. WE, the sane people, CAN NEVER FAIL TO VOTE, DEMMITT!!!, all WE have to do is SHOW UP!
4. When in doubt, for f#(&$ sake, read rule no. 1!!!

(943 posts)actual voter fraud. The person who's planning on fraudulent voting will get a robo-call
from the republicon telling them the wrong date, or polling place has moved, or your candidate
has already won.
