A dimly lit, former nightclub at 24th and North is one of several Milwaukee locations that may hold the key to todays recall election.
The building is at the heart get-out-the-vote organizing by Wisconsin Jobs Now, a non-partisan group that has been using the former Amistad club since May 21 to coordinate the work of hundreds of volunteers.
Tuesday, the building was a swarm of activity volunteers canvassing neighborhoods to remind people to vote, drivers with 15-passenger vans taking people to the polls, volunteers answering phone calls and relaying names of those needing rides. There was even a mobile billboard driving around the city to remind people to vote.
If mid-morning reports from several central city polling locations are any indication, the efforts are paying off. Turnout was high, with scores waiting in line to both register and vote. In the enthusiasm of the moment, some even compared turnout to Obamas election in 2008.

Every vote cast above expectation is a vote that demolishes all those polls that showed things tied based on survey weightings based on historic patterns of voter turnout!

(27,985 posts)People like to blame Waukesha, but there were 108,000 folks in Milwaukee alone who voted for Obama and didn't vote for Barrett in 2010. He lost by 125k. We NEEED strong turnout in Milwaukee and Dane.

(36,063 posts)There are certainly enough Democratic leaning registered voters to make the recall happen...if they turn out...I'm so hoping for big turnout in Milwaukee!

While there's no specific number on what turnout is looking like yet in the city of Milwaukee, Election Commission Executive Director Susan Edman says the turnout looks more like 2008 than it does 2010.
"It's been much higher than 2010," Edman said. "We've had long lines at all of the polling places. This might be more along the lines of 2008 when it comes to turnout."
Edman also said that city staff are being recruited to help out polling locations and that some wards have called saying they're running out of voter registration forms and ballots.

(15,090 posts)They have actual paper ballots? If so, there's some chance at a halfway fair election.

(3,521 posts)after you complete them, you feed the ballot into an optical scanning machine which counts the votes and retains the ballot in case there is a dispute they can be hand counted. It is an imperfect system but I don't know if a better one has been divised.

(23,311 posts)I've had the impression that this is a Dem anti-Walker stronghold, and would be crucial to the success of the recall. I'm getting a really good feeling about this election. Please, God, let it be so!

(31,706 posts)Big turnouts always favor cities that hold predominately Democratic voters. This is especially the case in Milwaukee and Dane counties...a strong turnout along with good numbers from other areas could make the pundits on the teevee eat some words later.
This election is one of SuperPacs vs. People Power...a win for Barrett and other Democrats today sends a shiver up a lot of billionaire spines...

(32,095 posts)There are too many many NEW voters using same-day registration in Milwaukee, and they don't have enough personnel to handle them. So, reinforcements are being sent in.

(36,063 posts)Big numbers in Dane and City of Milwaukee are really essential to success in the gubernatorial recalls. It feels GREAT to have a sense that today that's what is happening.
