Being Jewish is cultural, not just religious.

I would say it is shocking how little people seem to know about Jews, but given the anti-Semitism I have seen and the excuses made for it, I am not really at all surprised. There is a reason history repeats itself; ignorance!

Jews are not required to believe in God. This is one way we differ from Christianity, which is a faith-based religion. Judaism is a law-based religion. Jews are required to follow the commandments in the Torah, so if you don't worship another god and keep the rules, your lack of personal faith is not going to condemn you (which is not to say that being a public atheist is a good idea in an observant community). The big complaint you read about Bernie in religious Jewish publications is not that he doesn't believe in God, but that he doesn't follow the commandments.
