14. Teachable moment for me. What would be the best way for a white person to be supportive?

It's surely no good for the white people in the line to have seemed, by their silence, to assent to the racist comments those people were making. I'm also wary, though, of acting as if a person of color needs a white person like me to speak for them, or come to their defense.

There's probably no one-size-fits-all advice you can offer me to fit every situation. Perhaps the best way to put my question is to ask: what reaction from the other white people in the line do you most wish your kids could have seen and heard?

but zombies did make us feel very alone.
I don't see most of this country finding too much wrong with Trump and the media treats his rhetoric like a viable direction for the country. Scary as hell
Too many people in other countries went outside and watched their neighbor being taken away to a train, and then went inside and had dinner

It's clear to me now that the answer to my question is incredibly simple: Everybody, do something. It doesn't have to be much, but for gosh sakes, everybody do something!

People with that bully mentality are emboldened by silence, and they're intimidated when they know they're outnumbered. It would have been awfully easy for the people around you to show those guys that they were outnumbered. All they would have had to do is turn and stare, in that way that people instinctively do when they hear something outrageously rude said in public. That alone could have quieted and intimidated the outspoken racists, and left you and your children feeling secure and safe and supported.

Instead, your family was left with the ugly, enduring feeling that, no, you might not be entirely safe. I'm ashamed and enraged to know that was done to you.

"Everybody, do something". It's that simple.

Again, thank you.

Rubio might have been right about one thing; Trump under pressure probably does wet his pants.
