Why wouldn't I want Trump as the GOP nominee?
It's easy. His followers are violent and batshit insane and are completely impervious to reason or civilized behavior.
So if our nominee beats Trump in the general, yeah that's a great thing. Except we're dealing with bitter, ugly Trumpkins who've had an extra three months to ferment their anger and hate, and they will lash out. And it will be against the Democratic president-elect, and all who supported her or him.
Better this gets nipped in the bud at the GOP convention. Trump gets denied there, and the Trumpkins take their anger out on the GOP, not the Democrats and the (sane) American people. Then they'll slowly simmer down over the next few months....but probably not enough to vote for whatever person the GOP puts up. If Trump tries to go third party, there'll be a split that will hopefully favor the Democrats.
Trust me, we don't want three more months of Trump and his loonies on our hands.

(31,519 posts)that he doesn't try to tone it down. He's enjoying this and, in fact, seems to encourage their outrage and violence. It could get really nasty and I would rather see that happen at the Republican convention.

(86,650 posts)the aftermath should rightfully take place on the R side and the D side needs to keep on truckin on a higher road without veering off into the anger zone.

(1,148 posts)Far-right people, racists and other "angry" types with violence issues have ALWAYS supported the GOP.
I've been observing the far right for a long time. And that is what these people are - far right, whether or not they belong to a far right group. They want group validation without the stigma of being an actual Klan member.
These people were around in the sixties to beat up "hippies" and protesters. They supported Ronald Reagan in the eighties. They were boorish "USA, USA" assholes who threatened protesters at Bush rallies.
It's just that now they have their own candidate who openly validates their value that violence is an acceptable way to handle disagreement. They may take encouragement from this, as they have from crude and racist Internet behavior and scary tea party protests. Clearly those things are not enough for them.
I'm not sure how I feel about "them" having their own candidate, but the fact is they have always been a problem. They're the reason race-baiters have won elections.
At least we can address this problem of fascism - yes, fascism - in the US while Trump is holding his Angry White Man rallies. We can use this time to teach what gun fanaticism and racism are doing to our country.

The Trumpkins as you call them -
Will either be angry - or emboldened.
Either way - if you look like me - you are in for a hell of a night. I do not trust these people to not engage in direct attacks on private citizens, their homes, their physical bodies.
This is a violent creature we are dealing with.

(58,724 posts)Certainly Ted Cruz is not much better.

(43,184 posts)Unless perhaps they pair him with some sort of establishment type that the bosses absolutely love to the extent that it overshadows their disdain for Cruz.
But as scary as Cruz's ideology is, he's not getting the massive and violent crowds that Trump's getting. And Cruz has burned so many bridges with the GOP that any support of him by the party will be so tepid, they'll be in no hurry to get behind him.
So, yes, as crazy as it sounds, I'd rather the unsavory possibility of Cruz as the nominee over Trump. Barely. Very barely.
But it will more likely be Paul Ryan or someone similar who they foist up instead.

Trump will blow up the republican party and it'll be years before it can recover (which is why the republican leadership is fighting him so hard).
I'm rooting for Trump.

(43,184 posts)If it's just Trump himself, fine.
But having to deal with the Trumpkins, who cannot be reasoned with, in their defeat....ugh. Batter down the hatches.

(7,107 posts)Trump didn't create them. The RW media, Tea Party, talk radio created those people.
They aren't going away even if Trump is denied the nomination.

Burn it down Trump!

(37,573 posts)Millions of people who you think are "violent and batsh*t insane and completely impervious to reason or civilized behavior."
If that statement is your example of "reason" then I am not surprised that many people are impervious to it.
This isn't DI, of course, but imagine if you were going to write a reasoned essay to convince an otherwise reasonable person to NOT support Trump. What would you say to them?
I wish more people were using DU for things like that, instead of using it seemingly to promote hatred.

(15,859 posts)They're not going anywhere - even if Trump does. They'll join a fucking white power movement or something. The right wing media has been whipping these knuckledraggers into a froth for 8 years. All Trump did was lift the cover and let the pot boil over.
