The UVa student sentenced to 15 years by N. Korea stole the poster as a trophy for a church

http://www.kansas.com/news/nation-world/article66341052.html

<snip>

Before the trial, Warmbier had said he tried to steal a propaganda banner as a trophy for an acquaintance who wanted to hang it in her church. That would be grounds in North Korea for a subversion charge. He identified the church as Friendship United Methodist Church. Meshach Kanyion, pastor of the church in Wyoming, declined to comment Wednesday.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unification_Church_and_North_Korea#Post-Soviet_era

In 1991 Moon travelled to North Korea to meet with its president, Kim Il-sung. In 1992 Kim gave his first and only interview with the Western news media to Washington Times reporter Josette Sheeran (who later became Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme). In 1994, Moon was officially invited to Kim's funeral, in spite of the absence of diplomatic relations between North Korea and South Korea.

In 1998, Unification Church-related businesses launched operations in North Korea with the approval of the government of South Korea, which had prohibited business relationships between North and South before. In 2000, the church-associated business group Tongil Group founded Pyeonghwa Motors in the North Korean port of Nampo, in cooperation with the North Korean government. It was the first automobile factory in North Korea.

During the presidency of George W. Bush, Dong Moon Joo, a Unification Church member and then president of The Washington Times, undertook unofficial diplomatic missions to North Korea in an effort to improve its relationship with the United States. Joo was born in North Korea and is a citizen of the United States....

In 2010 in Pyongyang, to mark the 20th anniversary of Moon's visit to Kim Il-sung, de jure President Kim Yong-nam hosted Moon's son Hyung Jin Moon, then the president of the Unification Church, in his official residence. At that time, Hyung Jin Moon donated 600 tons of flour to the children of Jeongju, the birthplace of Sun Myung Moon.

the victim of a corrupt and dangerous government and leader, you don't mess with a corrupt and dangerous government and leader.

Case in point - my husband had the opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia when our children were young. I thought about it for less than a second and said, "No." It would have feathered our nest nicely, but with three young daughters (two blonde), I knew what the country was about and that it wouldn't be wise to go there.

to do a painting of his favorite Mosque

I told him as a transexual going to Islamabad to paint an image of a mosque, he would be arrested and spend ten years in a Pakistani jail if he wasn't lynched first

Some places you don't go and if you do knowing the risks you are either brave or stupid

Stealing a propaganda poster and trying to smuggle it out of NK qualifies as stupid

you'd know it said nothing about him having a church, much less believing in God.

He'll be out shortly, as most other Americans are who've been in this situation over the years. Much to your chagrin too, I suppose.

It said he was trying to get it to give to some woman who wanted to put it in her church. I wouldn't even be able to ascertain whether SHE is even a fundamentalist based on this article. Could you walk me through your thought process a bit?

Stealing fer Jesus... Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! A hypocrite Christian doing something this stupid in a country like North Korea, I guess this is the point where he hopes the "works in mysterious ways" thing kicks in.
