If true the Republican Convention could be a blood bath

and if they try to stop Trump this way it will not be pretty:

NBC News: “After all the campaigning, debates and primaries, the GOP’s presidential nomination could hinge on what these insiders decide. The RNC Rules Committee decides party regulations and writes the first draft of convention rules, which are finalized by a convention rules committee and submitted to a floor vote.”

“Those rules are crucial. They decide which candidates are on the ballot: They could pass a rule allowing only Donald Trump to run in Cleveland, or a rule enabling new candidates to challenge him. They can decide how delegates vote — and when delegates can switch teams to support rival candidates. These are the kind of restrictions that could make the difference between a coronation or chaos in Cleveland.”

and was shocked that the rules can be changed willy-nilly by a group of 50 or so republicans. I think Cleveland is going to be seriously ugly. If i lived there, I'd be leaving town during the convention.

This is actually standard for both Republican and Democratic Conventions. Each Convention has to approve rules for that Convention. The way delegates vote does not depend on which candidate they are pledged to - candidates can try to get their delegates to vote a certain way on the rules but they cannot force them to. In fact it would not be surprising at all if some of the Trump delegates vote against him on the rules because they don't actually want him to win on the first ballot, knowing that they will be released from their obligation to vote for Trump after the first ballot. Yes it is going to get ugly.

Kind of like a Michael Bay film. Lots of blood, horrible actors, terrible dialog and a staggering body count.

No Bay film could be a Bay film without the all-important "treating the crew/plebs like absolute shit".

I have no doubt the republicans will run someone other than Trump. When have they ever cared what the rules say? They are fascists. They will adjust the rules to fit their needs. By the time convention is over Trump will be riding in the cage on top of Romney's car.

that Trump does not get a first ballot majority. I think the smart play for them would be to nominate Cruz in that case (assuming he is within 100-200 delegates of Trump) especially if he takes Kasich (or less likely Rubio) as his running mate. The combined total of both could be more than Trump so a case could be made for such a fusion.

They go to the bench warmers (Romney and Ryan) and it is going to get ugly. Not only will Trump supporters freak, but also the Cruz supporters.

Trump only plays by the rules when they work for him. If they don't work for him he doesn't.
I think it could very well come down to a Cruz/Kasich ticket, with Trump peeling off and mounting an independent run.

with Cruz in this election. If Trump was not in it I almost think Cruz would be winning the primary running away. The Republicans are going to have to deal with him the next 3-4 cycles otherwise. A loss usually puts someone out of consideration (of course you do have Nixon in 68).
