Just a note that, as people squabble about the election, life goes on...
Seattle police have spent more than two hours trying to coax a man down from an 80-foot-tall tree outside the downtown Macys store.
Police and firefighters responded to Stewart Street and Third Avenue around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports that the man had climbed about 70 feet up the sequoia tree in a street median.
Police negotiators used an extended ladder from a ladder truck to approach the man and try to persuade him to get down. The man has responded by yelling obscenities and at one point hurled an apple at fire department medics. Witnesses say the man also has thrown pine cones and pieces of tree branch.

(11,360 posts)... but, you're probably right - it's just ignorance on the reporter's part.

(63,208 posts)Everyone who hears the phrase "pine cone" knows what's being discussed. I'd have to guess that in this case the particular species of tree is the least generally interesting element of the story, so it bothers me not at all that the reporter didn't waste much time researching the correct nomenclature.

(33,327 posts)This is a 70 foot Sequoia - and likely designated a Seattle Exceptional Tree. He's basically stripped it at this point.
It's going to need an Arborist when they finally get him out. Street crazies are not charming. It's not funny any more.

(94,520 posts)A man who climbed an 80-foot tree outside the downtown Seattle Macys Tuesday morning and stayed there overnight has climbed down, to cheers from a gathered crowd.
The unidentified man, 28, spent a few minutes sitting on the ground at the foot of the tree before medics loaded him onto a gurney and took him to Harborview Medical Center.
#ManInTree is now on the ground and in contact with police. Officers still in speaking with him and working to safely resolve this incident, the Seattle Police Department tweeted, adding a few minutes later that the man was in custody and would get a medical evaluation.
He does not face charges at this time, according to Seattle Police Detective Patrick Michaud.
