They are going to rewrite/erase their history. Commentators will carry their water (in an attempt to save the Senate) but it won't work - the masses have been trained to follow the leader and their leader is cancelling out any reversal that they try.

has spent his adult life worshiping Ayn Rand? Now he's suddenly had an epiphany? I don't buy it. The ship is going down and the crew is trying everything they can to save it. It's too late. They've spent a generation cultivating their narrative and now that it's come to haunt them they will say anything to try to survive. Remember, these are people who continually tout that they are "true conservatives" with core principals. Now it's "never mind"? Hollow.

He's simply positioning himself. This move is as obvious as the nose on his face. Brokered convention is in the works and he thinks he'll be the go-to-guy.
