Wow.......Rockefeller family charity to withdraw all investments in fossil fuel companies

the fund singled out ExxonMobil, calling the world’s largest oil company ‘morally reprehensible’

The Rockefeller Family Fund, a charity set up in 1967 by descendants of John D Rockefeller, said on Wednesday that it would divest from all fossil fuel holdings “as quickly as possible”.

“There is no sane rationale for companies to continue to explore for new sources of hydrocarbons,” the RFF, which has relatively small total holdings of $130m (£92m), said in a statement. “We must keep most of the already discovered reserves in the ground if there is any hope for human and natural ecosystems to survive and thrive in the decades ahead.

“We would be remiss if we failed to focus on what we believe to be the morally reprehensible conduct on the part of ExxonMobil.
Evidence appears to suggest that the company worked since the 1980s to confuse the public about climate change’s march, while simultaneously spending millions to fortify its own infrastructure against climate change’s destructive consequences and track new exploration opportunities as the Arctic’s ice receded.”

and this:
Exxon knew of climate change in 1981, email says – but it funded deniers for 27 more years

Just like the tobacco industry knew nicotine caused cancer, but hid the fact PLUS then added MORE nicotine to cigs to make them more addictive.

BUT, they all knew prior to 1965, 50 years ago, which is when when President Johnson officially notified Congress about fossil fuel emissions and global warming and recommended it start action.

A family fortune built on oil has/had "charities" that invest in oil . . . is it just me, or does that sound a bit out of my left pocket and into my right pocket?

And you'll notice they tend to fund things that help their business interests or their social positions.

That is indeed the case. Invest in alternatives; elites have (finally) decided

A lot of the book value the oil majors is based on those discovered but unexploitable resources.

It is odd to me that anyone person/family/company can profit from something called "fossil fuel". "Fossil". Okay, pay them for the service/labor of extraction (if we must extract it, but best to leave it in the ground). But the profits from something in the earth, belongs to everyone. Then, we would not have a few billionaires, the wealth would be shared.

Anyway, good for the Rockefeller's to take this action now. Late, but good. May their statement through action help the conservation conversation.
