Our Governor and General Assembly are taking us right over the edge with their disregard for the Constitution and desire to infringe upon peoples' rights to keep a small group of scared people happy.
After volunteering here for 16 years I feel like I'm swimming upstream through glue and I don't know what to do. The biggest change would be getting Gov McCrory out of here and we're up against Koch and Pope money. Sending $5 and $10 and whatever you have to Roy Cooper's campaign against him would be a start I think. If anyone would like to do that, it would mean so much to us here.

My brain is fried from the constant onslaught of political stupid that is happening daily (fed and state) but I'm hoping to have some more links to campaigns that will take out members of the NC General Assembly who voted to hate and discriminate yesterday.
I know it's looking like 1950 in North Carolina but we're still the place where the brine of the ocean meets the sweet fresh water of the river, sweet tea and Dean and Deluca share a street in Charlotte and our progressive beginnings in education are still trying to hold on. I think I'm talking myself into it almost as much as everyone else. It's like our state is on life support and the doctors are dingbats.
Thanks for listening (reading).

(113,082 posts)haven't a clue how much harder we have to work to counter the thugs here. We are a purple state leaning blue, and the GOPs have hardwired themselves into a strong majority. Getting McCrory out is our best chance at even coming close to parity. Us GOTV have to get out almost 2 Dem voters for their one just to break even in the General Assembly.

(5,342 posts)That just ramped up their use of hate as a party favor.
Do you have any sources for campaigns that are hopeful for Dems in the state house or senate? I realize we won't be able to get control back this year but changing some now will be better than changing none and to continue to feel like we're floundering.
Thanks!

(5,342 posts)Jeter's I77 toll road flip flops are helpful and I like that Beasley has some political experience. We can work on getting some funds to his campaign next.
Thanks, I'm feeling better. More settled now that I have more focus.

(113,082 posts)ore than any other single issue, imo.
The more Republican voters hear about ALEC the more they distrust any GOP lawmaker affiliated with them. Thom Tillis will NOT be re-elected. He'd lose his home district.

(5,342 posts)Thanks to Black Box Voting and DU I was able to watch as we got rid of questionable machines and, as far as I know, the result of the 3 approved machines that our BsofE can pick from for elections is still the law.
Unfortunately it was a sweep of Tea Party candidates and Dems who stayed home in 2010 that shook us up. That's my opinion, though, for whatever that's worth. We've been paying for it since.

(5,342 posts)were a problem we wouldn't have elected President Obama, Senator Hagan, Congressman Kissell and our first female Governor Bev Perdue in 2008.
With dedication, perseverance and money to our candidates we'll be on the right side once again.

(13,685 posts)I wished you'd quit trying to sell me on those damn voting machines.
2008 we activists had just got the state to use paper ballots. The heat was on the machines then. Since then people like you have ignored the machines and now that whole list of folks you listed lost in NC. You're telling me the people of NC totally flipped and I'm telling you the people didn't flip, the machines did the flipping.

(5,342 posts)In 2010 a lot of the new voters who were so excited to vote for President Obama in '08 didn't come back out to vote and that made huge changes in state and federal offices in NC. The tea party and folks who manipulate them had the money and swept them into office. The reasons folks gave for not voting included not thinking it was as important as the presidential election, being disillusioned with Obama and how he performed the first 2 years, etc.
Kay Hagan had an well-orchestrated outside campaign come after her including groups of conservative Veterans who canvassed in NC to convince folks that Hagan was responsible for Veterans who had received horrible treatment in Arizona VA (among other outlandish stuff). That was also a non-Presidential election year and although we have more Dems then Rs in NC they get more out to vote in 'minor' elections.
Kissell forgot he was a Democrat and voted like a Republican almost every time he went in to vote. Couldn't be seen with Obama or speak in support of Obama lest he hurt conservatives feelings in the district. He was out on his 3rd campaign which was also non-presidential election year.
Bev Perdue quit.
We do have to be diligent about what they can get up to with our ballots and election results but I feel that we have more to be concerned with in NC from the new Voter ID laws and other ways they can steal elections thanks to the changes of the Voter Rights Act. All of this has been happening in conjunction with Art Pope and Koch funds going to make people believe their lies and make NC a place we can hardly recognize politically. We went purple and they got scared of our abilities.

(5,342 posts)And I'll bring election results. I'm guessing you'll just tell me voting machines Republicans elected no hope for NC.
By the way, if you know something about machines that flip votes in NC, I feel you should provide the evidence so we can get started on fixing that.

(14,920 posts)voting machines. The OP isn't "selling" anything, imho.
(DUers who haven't followed the shenanigans in NC politics in recent years might want to read up on Art Pope):

(13,685 posts)The machines flip the votes just the way he wants.
People ask for proof of the votes being flipped while at the same time point out how the voters flipped from electing Democrats to now electing republicans.
And they sit there and tell me they are ignoring the possibility that the machines could be doing the flipping.
They come up with all kinds of excuses on why the voters flipped - like this Art Pope is why. As if Art Pope were the most important person in all of NC and the most powerful ever and he controls how people vote.
The machine's counts are not audited yet some of you sit there and tell me to have faith and trust the machines. Ain't gonna happen, I know too much and I know who owns the machines.

(8,175 posts)Why the hell can't we encourage dems to get out and vote? Voter apathy is at a low right now for both dems and repubs and I'm wondering why we can't get enough people to care about change to get out there and vote like every adult should want to do.
What will it take? Voting is a hell of a lot easier than armed revolution. It just seems like people would realize that if enough of us voted, we could enact real change now. We have the candidate who will fight for us. And either candidate is far better than the republicans regaining control of the white house, so what is wrong with people?
It is our lack of participation that allows the republicans to take over state and federal congress and legislature and start their regressive attacks on any progress we've made as a country.
Is there something lacking in our education process that does not instill this responsibility to vote in all our youth? I don't remember leaving high school with that feeling of my responsibility, so maybe that is what is lacking?
It just seems like we keep struggling with this process and we know that if dems showed up at the polls we would win most of the time.
What can we do (I mean other than what we've been doing up till now) to wake people up to the power they hold if only they would exercise it?
I'm so frustrated...not with our elected leaders, but with the people who just walk away as if they are not responsible for what is happening in this country.

(5,342 posts)I think a big part of it is education and I'm happy to say that I see that changing and more younger folks are active politically than they have been in the past. We just need to get everyone to be consistent with their voting.
It's pretty sad when a politically savvy person can time a campaign during an off presidential election season and win just by getting a couple thousand people to go vote for them.
