Minimum wage setback in Birmingham won't deter Mobile County lawmaker (al.com)

The state Legislature and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley overreached in their duties by thwarting the city of Birmingham's request to increase its minimum, said the state lawmaker who proposing a similar increase in Mobile County.

State Rep. Napoleon Bracy, D-Prichard, said the action in Montgomery this week that voided Birmingham's new $10.10 per hour minimum wage won't deter his efforts to bring forward a similar bill before the Mobile state House delegation next week.

"What is happening here with Mobile County would be an act of the Legislature," Bracy said Thursday. "It would be a totally different situation from the Legislature overruling the city (of Birmingham). This would be a state issue."

Bracy said he has at least five local co-sponsors for his bill, and that it has "a legitimate chance of moving forward" out of the Alabama House. However, he said it faces difficulties in the state Senate.

State Sen. Rusty Glover, R-Semmes, told AL.com last month that he sees "no chance" of Bracy's proposal advancing.
