Discrimination is wrong, and we believe it has no place in North Carolina or anywhere in our country, reads the letter to North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R), released by LGBT civil rights groups Human Rights Campaign and Equality NC. As companies that pride ourselves on being inclusive and welcoming to all, we strongly urge you and the leadership of North Carolinas legislature to repeal this law in the upcoming legislative session.

(2,978 posts)Roy's no big progressive and being elected a Dem Governor with a crazy GOP legislature isn't going to be fun for him, but the GOP crazies just handed us our best chance to mobilize the voters to at least get McCrory out.
With gerrymandering we're pretty screwed with the General Assembly until at least 2020.

(31,392 posts)I LOVE seeing the pressure growing to repeal this hateful bill.
Protesters shut down Franklin Street in Chapel Hill last night--and the police were told to just let the demonstration
run its course.
Opposition to this isn't going away: McCrory and his merry band of bigots seriously underestimated the blowback to
their little hate bill.

----------ARTICLE DETAILS THE MAIN POINTS and ends with:
"But the way in which this change came about might be even worse. The General Assembly didnt hold a special session for the first time in 35 years to respond to Charlottes nondiscrimination ordinance it used it as a diversion to roll back back rights for North Carolina employees. When lawmakers framed the debate as one about bathrooms they had already won. Calling House Bill 2 a Trojan horse is misleading. Trojan horses are far less deceptive. Its more like a plague infested rat scurrying into a sleepy Medieval European town. The rats were pests, to be sure. But the hidden disease was far more destructive. The General Assembly and our Governor passed a rat of a Bill that, itself, is quite disgusting. Unfortunately for North Carolinians, that rat carried something even more sinister."

High Point Spring Market Statement:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact:
Ashley D. Grigg Manager, Communications ashley@highpointmarket.org 336.888.3236
Statement from the Executive Committee of the High Point Market Authority
High Point, NC, March 28, 2016
In the last few days, dozens of customers have contacted the High Point Market Authority to inform us that they have cancelled plans to attend the Market in April due to passage of HB2. There are also several campaigns on social media calling for a boycott of the High Point Market this spring. As leaders and organizers of the High Point Market, we feel an obligation to inform the public and our government leaders in Raleigh of the significant economic damage that HB2 is having on the High Point Market and on the North Carolina economy. Based on the reaction in just the last few days, hundreds and perhaps thousands of our customers will not attend Market this April.
We would like to take this opportunity to clearly state that the High Point Market does not discriminate, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. In fact, we embrace all of our attendees and believe that the diversity of the 75,000 people who attend Market is one of our greatest assets and strengths. We also greatly appreciate our partners in Raleigh in both the executive and legislative branches who have worked to strengthen the High Point Market in recent years and who provide us with a significant
portion of our budget.
We believe it is vital for them to be kept informed of the publics reaction to HB2, and to the significant economic damage that this controversy is causing. We also feel an obligation to inform all of the Markets stakeholders about this legislation and its impact. Our most important stakeholders are our buyers, including both retailers and designers. Other stakeholders include roughly 2000 exhibitors, over 100 landlords, the City of High Point and its citizens and the people and businesses in surrounding communities many of whom owe their jobs to the economic activity generated by the High Point Market.
According to an economic impact study conducted by Duke University in 2013, the High Point Market is the largest economic event in the State of North Carolina each year. The Market has an annual economic impact of $5.38 billion and generates over 600,000 visitor days to the state each year. The Market and the home furnishings industry in North Carolina are responsible for over 37,000 jobs in our great state.

(19,841 posts)--and it's in High Anxiety mode right now. The big annual event is mid-April. SO MUCH money to be lost.
I am so glad to see the business sector responding. Yes it is the ONLY thing the perpetrators understand.
If NC's economy has to be trashed to get McCrony and the Koch gang of hijackers out, then so be it.

(3,017 posts)Most of the furniture manufacturing in NC went overseas many years ago.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)I don't know all that much about it, but I think they bring overseas lines in now, or designed here, made there. Yes furniture manufacturing has been gutted in NC but they still do this big market thing, is still billed as the largest furniture showcase event in the world. Very big deal to NC.
This law is so stupid and backward. I hope McCrony Co is getting an earful and an email full. From all directions.

(3,017 posts)They were saying that a group of 80 had already canceled a tourism trip to Asheville and more were coming. The mayor of Asheville is trying to tell people who know the area that we are inclusive.
The governor of Georgia is incurring the wrath of his party for vetoing a "'religious freedom" measure that was also targeted at the LGBT community because it was going to prevent Atlanta from hosting a Super Bowl in the new stadium that taxpayers are helping billionaire Arthur Blank with (to replace the 25 year old Georgia Dome which is still nice enough to host all kinds of major events).
The Republican Governors have overplayed the wedge issues to the bigots and are alienating their real base, the upper 0.1%.

(19,841 posts)and we know that if business hurts--something gets DONE.
If it's just people hurting
The Rethug bidness sector got in bed with the fundies/tea party and this is their unholy result. May it bite them in the ass many times over.
I hope the whole country boycotts North Carolina so NC can scrape off McCrony and the Koch hijackers. There are many good people in North Carolina who do not deserve this.

(1,587 posts)Thank you to everyone who is speaking out and taking a stand. Business or individual, we need a lot of voices, and sadly, the threat of huge financial losses to force McCrory to take a step back on this shit.
Money is the only thing they understand. They have no empathy or sympathy for those they hurt with these hateful laws.
