The State Department just issued a travel warning for ugly people

Nothing personal, but the State Department wants you to keep in mind just how attractive you are while traveling abroad for spring break. I mean, if you’re not a “10” over here, then you aren’t over there either!

That was the exact message that went out in a tweet from the @TravelGov account on Wednesday afternoon. The tweet read, in its entirety: “Not a ‘10’ in the US? Then not a 10 overseas. Beware of being lured into buying expensive drinks or worse -- being robbed. #springbreakingbadly.”

And plenty had questions or comments on what this might say about the attractiveness of Americans in general, or of their own personal hotness quotient:

The @TravelGov Twitter account offers a range of safety information. Some tweets have to do with reports of violence and protests overseas, advising U.S. travelers to avoid those areas. Other tweets offer advice about applying for passports. This appears to be the only tweet that veers into the kind of advice that should probably be reserved for closest friends and frenemies.


The @TravelGov account at first stood by its tweet.

It apologized a few hours later on Twitter.

The tweet has since been deleted, but survived long enough for some parody accounts to spring up:

No word on what the State Department advises if you are, in fact, a “10.”
