POLL: Americans say U.S.’s biggest drug threat is already 100% legal

America’s communities are besieged by a highly dangerous, addictive drug. Its users can become agitated and violent, harming themselves and family members. It’s incredibly toxic and even lethal at high doses. Many people who start abusing it are unable to quit. It’s responsible for nearly 90,000 deaths each year. And in a new survey, more than three-quarters of Americans identified it as a serious problem in their community.

I’m talking, of course, about alcohol.

In a new survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research on American attitudes toward substance use and abuse, 76 percent of respondents named alcohol as a serious problem in their communities. That’s higher than the percentage who named any other drug. More people are worried about alcohol than are worried about painkillers. Or cocaine and meth. Or heroin. And marijuana? That’s at the bottom of the list.

The most dangerous thing about marijuana to its users are the laws and enforcement against it.

I also wonder how much big tobacco paid to keep their products off this list?

if you can avoid chasing the dragon like I have for 3 years. It is not much different then opiate painkillers. Actually, it tests out of your urine as morphine.

You can on heroin.

Your chance of contracting an std such as aids isn't anywhere near the same as well.

Heroin isn't bad if you can control it. OK, sure, I'll give you that one, but its a hell of a lot more difficult to control than pot and if one can't control it I would rather have a pot habit than a heroin habit. I've seen both up close and personal and heroin can really fuck a person up.

Pot is a lot safer. I just insulfate the H. I have never shot up. Of course, I have a decent income, so IF I ever decided to shoot up, I would have enough money for needles.

I never gave a shit if I was an alcoholic or if anyone else thought I was. When I decided to stop, I stopped. Now it's only one or two and only in a couple of places and that amounts to about ten drinks a year.

I suppose that means that I was never really an alcoholic. What really keeps me from going out and drinking as much as I like to drink, is smoking. That's the one thing that I get an occasional strong urge to do. After numerous failed quitting attempts, I finally learned to defeat those spontaneous urges. They only last a little while. But out of the blue I can experience what is like a major nicotine withdrawal as if I only quit the day before. I just know to talk myself out of running to get a pack now.

It shows that people have one of the "drugs" fingered correctly, alcohol. Smart

On the other hand, based on science and fact, Marijuana shouldn't even be on the list, let alone next to Heroin. This shows how ignorant people are on the subject.

There are many people living with hroni pain whose only relief is painkillers. The regulations make it harder on them, and increase the populations of prisons and cemeteries. It's a compound problem arising from a lack of healthcare leading to easily solved health problems leading to chronic conditions.

Relapsed six times. Started drinking at 14. Spent the next thirteen of twenty four years self-medicated because I couldn't deal with the abuse, bipolar insanity and the asperger's internalization of the physical, emotional and psychological abuse I received.

Alcohol is a nasty task master. Heroin is just are difficult to kick permanently when you got on the horse.

I love that pot is on there. Pot is about as harmless as it comes.

Sadly, prohibition didn't work and the drug war prohibition has failed as well.

My husband got a statement detailing a doctor's visit yesterday of what was paid and not paid by Medicare. Fortunately the vaccine he got was covered: $466 plus $50 to administer it ($50! To give an injection!).
