Magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurs off the coast of Mie Prefecture, Japan

Less than an hour ago, a Magnitude 6.1 earthquake rattled parts of Mie and Wakayama prefectures in central Japan. According to Japanese television, the maximum seismic intensity on land was a 4 on the Japanese scale, meaning that minor damage could occur but there would be little chance for injuries or major damage. Although the quake was centered off the coast of the Kii Peninsula, there was no danger of a major tsunami.
