WASHINGTON, April 3 (UPI) -- Frozen broccoli cuts sold in 11 states have been recalled over fears of listeria contamination.
Alimentos Congelados, S.A. announced a voluntary recall of 1,800 cases of frozen broccoli cuts because possible health risks. The vegetable may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism which can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems," the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.
Frozen broccoli packaged under Save-A-Lot's exclusive Wylwood brand is being recalled after a random test by Ohio officials found Listeria monocytogenes, foodsafetynews.com reported.
While healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the FDA said in a statement.
