Is there a plan?
Today, it appears that neither Trump or Cruz will get the necessary number of delegates for their nomination.
What happens then?
The delegates supporting Rubio and Kasich become very important. They have the numbers to put either over the top. As it looks today, Cruz would need the delegates of both Rubio and Kasich to overtake Trump in the stretch. However, Trump would probably only need the delegates of one of them to get to the magic number of 1237.
At the present time, Rubio has more delegates than Kasich and he is not in the race. It is a known fact that he does not care for Cruz or Trump. Which does he hate more?
Kasich is clinging to the hope that no one will have the numbers and they will turn to him on the second or third ballot as the logical choice.
It is a super mess. My guess is that the Republicans have no plan at this time. They are praying for an act of God to save them.

(7,820 posts)Partly because each nominating convention has to have the rules voted on and this one hasn't. One of the biggest questions is whether, if no one gets the nomination on the first or second ballot, other names who weren't running previously would able to be voted for.

Wife asked if we're protesting the RNC . . . not with these sidearm-sporting suburban and hillbilly yahoos out and about. The possible killing of a human and getting away with it would be a bonus for these shits. The CPD are by and large on the same page as the RNC - highly conservative institution filled with reactionary corrupt assholes.
There'd have to be large numbers of protesters for me to attend. I'm not going to be one of 100.

(13,808 posts)Every right wing nut will be vying for their candidate and then in the end Trump will run as a third party candidate, if does not get his way or the GOP will run someone as a third party candidate. It is will be fun watching what comes out of their convention, but also could be scary to see who comes out as their nominee?

(82,849 posts)Governor of Illinois when Obama was first elected president, vacating his Senate seat, which according to Illinois law would be filled by a gubernatorial appointment. Blago got cross-wise for stating the obvious: He was sitting on a gold mine, and he planned to get maximum value for his appointment.
Kasich and Rubio are similarly sitting on a political gold mine. It will be interesting to see what sort of value each places on their pledged delegates, their respect (if any) for the integrity of the process and the system, and just how cheaply or dearly they sell out for. Trump likes to brag about his deal-making abilities, but here's a situation where he needs what others have a lot more than they need him.

(73,581 posts)It is fascinating to consider the possibilities. A few things are known for sure: Kasich, for example, is in because the republican establishment wants him to prevent Trump from having the magic number of delegates going into the convention. And Trump will almost certainly enter the convention just short of that needed number. Thus, a brokered republican convention is almost a certainty.
Will it be similar to Chicago in 1968? Yes and no. The Trump supporters will correctly hold that he won the primary contest. The establishment will correctly hold that he didn't earn the needed number of delegates to be picked in the first round. There will be an acrimonious fight.
Will that lead to Trump or an establishment lap dog getting the nod? That depends upon two things: which side is better at manipulating the rules, and which side has more juice nation-wide. Thus, the republican convention will be -- by definition -- a powder keg. Anything small thing can act as a fuse. And sparks will be flying.
The Trump supporters mat very well, should Donald be denied the nomination, cause problems across the country -- and not only for the republican establishment. They are an aggressive, violence-prone crowd.

(111,107 posts)The repercussions will not be within the Republican Party only but across the entire political spectrum, in my opinion.
I have noticed that Trump has been rather easy with Kasich? He may think Kasich delegates can get him over the 1237 number if he is a bit short? He could make a deal. He could offer Kasich the VP slot if he can deliver his delegates to the Trump campaign? That is a scenario that is a possibility. But Rubio is no friend of Cruz....perhaps he and Trump could bury the hatchet?
But, I do not think any delegates of Kasich or Rubio would vote for Trump without the promise of the VP slot.
It is interesting.
