A white geometry teacher at a Beaumont, Texas high school has been arrested and charged with one count of assault for hitting a black student multiple times. The incident was caught on video and shared widely on Twitter last week.
The student may have asked about a grade, according to the Washington Post. The teacher yelled at him in response, saying, Because youre stopping him from graduating, you idiot ass! and hit him five times. She then mocked the student when he asked why she hit him.
Its not clear exactly what happened before the assault. The teacher was placed on administrative leave after school district officials verified the incident.
The conduct was substantiated by video footage viewed by BISD police and administration, Beaumont Independent School District confirmed in a statement. The District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students. BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct. The teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave pending action on her contract.

(11,362 posts)If the student had smacked the teacher like that, he'd be arrested.
This is worse, she's not only assaulting the kid, she's abusing her position, and she's the one who's supposed to be a "responsible adult".

(2,841 posts)teachers are just losing their cool when it comes to that. Not excusing this lady for slapping up the kid but it's real easy to see why it happened.

Despite the cost and size of this problem, very little is known about factors that lead to teacher victimization. More research is needed to better understand the causes and correlates of teacher victimization.
How Big Is the Problem?
Each year, 253,100 (7 percent) teachers are threatened with injury and they can be divided into the following categories by:
Locale
109,800 (43 percent) in cities 78,100 (31 percent) in suburbs 27,500 (11 percent) in towns 37,700 (15 percent) in rural areas
School Level
139,400 (55 percent) in secondary schools 113,700 (45 percent) in elementary schools
Gender
78,500 (31 percent) male teachers 174,500 (69 percent) female teachers
