'So did you hear the one about Republican presidential candidate John Kasich and the students of the Talmud? Sadly, its not a joke. It does have a punchline of sorts. Whether its funny or not depends on your point of view.
While campaigning in New York Tuesday, in what Jewish Insiders Jacob Kornblush calls a pre-Passover learning tour in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, Kasich first had a debate with Ezra Friedlander a Democrat by the way about who is the most admired person in the Torah.
Friedlander: I would say, Moses.
Kasich: What about Abraham? What happened to Abraham?
Friedlander, as Kornbluh relates, then explained that the story of the Jewish people accepting the Torah from G-d started when they left Egypt led by Moses.
To which Kasich responded: What are you talking about? Get outta here. The story of the people are Abraham when God made a covenant with Abraham, not Moses.
Friedlander: Yeah, but you know what? In our prayers, we do mention Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (here Kasich interrupts with, Yeah, like they were important) but we refer to the laws as the laws of Moses and Israel. So, Moses is up there.
Opportunity to look the fool rained down on Kasich like manna from heaven, for he then ran across the group of Hasidic yeshiva students. Now, as Wikipedia will tell you, yeshiva is a Jewish institution that focuses on the study of traditional religious texts, primarily the Talmud and Torah study.'>>>

(9,350 posts)He may have done better than I would have done. He knew at least one thing more than I did. I knew about Joseph's brothers selling him into slavery and that eventually he met up with his brothers again. However, I did not know that was how the Jews ended up in Egypt.
The only thing that could have helped me is that I may have just kept my mouth shut except to ask questions. Maybe I would have asked why Moses was such a hero to them. I might not have brought up Abraham. I might have also asked them why they chose their course of study. I might have asked them if they have memorized the Talmud and/or Torah. I might have then asked them how they remember certain stories from the bible. Do they just read the stories over and over again?
I guess what John Kasich did was the equivalent of someone who has only basic knowledge of math trying to debate math with Albert Einstein. However, I think I know why he did what he did. I think his mistake is thinking Jews are just like Evangelicals. I think Abraham is a much bigger deal than Moses for Evangelicals.

(90,843 posts)He could have asked somebody Jewish, who would have been happy to clue him in.
But no, he seems to live in some kind of impermeable bubble, where Jews are just the remnants of Jesus's relatives who somehow missed the Good News, instead of a distinct group with no intention of converting, thank you.
A lot of Jews, the majority in fact, are assimilated, with varying degrees of observance. Unless they mention it, why would you notice?
Kasich happened to wander into the most observant kind of group, where people hold themselves very much apart and dress quite differently from the rest of the country living in 2016. The men spend their lives in religious study, and the story of Jesus figures nowhere in that study. He set out to school these men and tell them who the most important figures are in their sacred universe, and what is more, when he was corrected, he insisted he was right.
Passover, aka Pesach, is almost here. It is the most important holiday in the Jewish calendar. It is an elaborate retelling of the story of how the Jewish people escaped from slavery. They were led by Moses, who kept telling Pharaoh to let his people go or else. Moses led them out of slavery. Moses guided them thru the desert. Moses gave them the Ten Commandments. Moses led them to the Promised Land. Not Abraham. Enslaved African Amercans sang a lot of spirituals about that story.
I'm not Jewish myself, but my husband of over 30 years is. I think I just took it for granted that any American politician who's been in the business for all those decades would not approach a Jewish community as though they were from an alien planet.

(9,350 posts)I cannot believe how condescending John Kasich was in that video. That was completely unnecessary, especially at the end when he told the guy "I know". If I were Jewish I would not vote for John Kasich. How could anyone whether or not they are running for office, be that rude to a group of people while discussing their religion? He acted like he was a religious scholar. To on two occasions he said he will have to teach them about their own religion. That is just stupid.
