Investigators say Meiser broke into Hayes' home, picked up a machete and waited for the man and his wife to return in an attempt to extort $40,000. Hayes tried to run after discovering Meiser but fell, and was killed. Meiser escaped and police found him at a Corvallis motel more than a week later.

Meiser, a former white supremacist and neo-Nazi, didn't know Hayes. He faces charges of aggravated murder, first-degree robbery, and first- and second-degree burglary ...
