I can't believe (yes I can) how much I'm missing my Snootchie Bootchies
I'm looking for any pics or vids that I can find of her but am sadly realizing that there are not very many of either
Here she is digging at the beach - she comes in at the 36 second mark
Moral Of Story: If you have a special pet be sure to document their life better than I did - I could watch a hundred of these vids
She was a wonderful and beautiful dog and will be greatly missed

(5,141 posts)I have photos of my departed fur pals everywhere, and I do honor to them after they've left me by going and getting another unfortunate creature that needs a loving, forever home. The added bonus for me is that they help me heal - the best cure for a broken heart is to find a new love.
By the way, one of my current pack includes Darcy, a bait dog (6 months old!) who was found in Hollis, Queens with bite marks all over her. She is now the most spoiledest doggie in the world. And I'm happy that she decided to give humans another chance...she's the most affectionate little pup I've ever owned.

(36,855 posts)Darcy found a good home, indeed. And by that, I mean... you are lucky she found you!

(5,141 posts)Darcy and my other dog, Django where the ones who rescued me! And I would be remiss not to mention my kitties as well. All rescues who rescued me.
As I am typing this 2 cats are on my lap and Django is snoring away, dreaming of chasing squirrels or finally catching that pesky mailman!!

(5,390 posts)She had been in there for six months, so I thank dog it was a no kill shelter. Her original owners were none too nice and the write up they gave her would have been a death sentence in a regular shelter. At the time her name was Shelby, we renamed her Snootchie Bootchies, it fit her so well she loved everything and everyone (except birds). We plan on adopting again after our move back to the west coast.
We also have a jack that we adopted 9 years ago...now he is a bit of a jerk but we love him.
I'm so glad Darcy found you, she will be ever grateful and give you unconditional love. I know that is how it was with Snootchie.

(2,674 posts)Looking at the picture of her in your lap, her mouth is open and tongue hanging out, a sign of dog that is happy and right where she wants to be (in her master's lap). Thank you for giving her so much loving. It is so hard to lose a pet and you are right, take more pictures of your four-legged friends.
I am a big dog person, but years ago I took a little yorkie on rescue. She became my dearest little friend. She lived to be almost twenty years and when the day came for her to go to rainbow sky I took one last picture of her. Glad we had all those years together.

(5,390 posts)We were representing our employer at the Wag-a-thon in Dana Point. Snootchie loved all the attention she got. She never passed up a good ear rubbing.
We took a last pic of her with us and Randall (our jack).

(36,855 posts)I understand what you are going through.
Dogs never die. They dont know how to. They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they dont die. If they did they would not want to always go for a walk, even long after their old bones say: 'No, no, not a good idea. Let's not go for a walk.' Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk. They might get one step before their aging tendons collapse them into a heap on the floor, but that's what dogs are. They walk.
Its not that they dislike your company. On the contrary, a walk with you is all there is. Their boss, and the cacaphonic symphony of odor that the world is. Cat poop, another dogs mark, a rotting chicken bone (exultation), and you. Thats what makes their world perfect, and in a perfect world death has no place.
However, dogs get very very sleepy. Thats the thing, you see. They don't teach you that at the fancy university where they explain about quarks, gluons, and Keynesian economics. They know so much they forget that dogs never die. Its a shame, really. Dogs have so much to offer and people just talk a lot.
When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and thats why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. Thats when they say: 'Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.'
When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and thats why, of course, you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap. After a while they sleep more. (remember, a dog while is not a human while. You take your dog for walk, its a day full of adventure in an hour. Then you come home and it's a week, well one of your days, but a week, really, before the dog gets another walk. No WONDER they love walks.)
Anyway, like I was saying, they fall asleep in your heart, and when they wake up, they wag their tail. After a few dog years, they sleep for longer naps, and you would too. They were a GOOD DOG all their life, and you both know it. It gets tiring being a good dog all the time, particularly when you get old and your bones hurt and you fall on your face and dont want to go outside to pee when it is raining but do anyway, because you are a good dog. So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.
But dont get fooled. They are not 'dead.' Theres no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when youre not expecting it. Its just who they are.
I feel sorry for people who dont have dogs sleeping in their heart. Youve missed so much. Excuse me, I have to go cry now."
Excuse me, as well.

(17 posts)I'm so sorry - so cute & they have the joy of life
it breaks our hearts to lose our fur babies.
When I lost my last guys (6 years ago) I made a special folder on my hard drive that said "Mac I love you".
I'm trying to remember to document my two guys now - one is 14 and one is 6.
I don't think I've ever gotten over losing any of my dogs -
I told my family to just shoot me when I can't have dogs anymore
Hugs to you and your family.

(1,786 posts)I've lost a lot in the last three years. A MIL who I really loved, 4 cats, and my 24 year old daughter.
just remember that there is another dog (or cat) out there who needs your love and will give you back in return.

I am 54 now and when I think about it (mostly about how lucky I was to have him) .... I still mourn his loss (typing this caused me to tear up).
Due to a super hectic life I didn't get another dog until three years ago ... she is the love of my life (too).

(12,296 posts)Hank was what people call my 'soul dog'. I adopted him for my daughter in 2000, when he was a puppy.
Over time she lost interest & he attached to me, eventually becoming my best friend.
When he passed in January 2015, at the old & well worn age of 16 after a very long & full life, I couldn't breathe. It was like I died too.
I knew it was coming: he had a heart murmur, fluid on his lungs, arthritis, he was deaf & blind in one eye. But that didn't make it any easier.
I have his ashes in a heart shaped urn, with a piece of his favorite blankey & his collar draped around it, and I recently had a 'Cuddle Clone' made of him. (http://www.cuddleclones.com/) While they aren't cheap, the overwhelming emotion when I took him out of the box & saw all those markings again knocked me for a loop. You may want to look into something similar.
I've lost 4 dogs over the years, and Hank was - and will always be - the hardest. The one I won't get over.
Be kind to yourself.

(22,075 posts)I miss, and loved, my fur kids so much. Unfortunately, we've lost many to plain old age (17 yr. old Miniature Doxie, couple of 16 yr. cats), and cancer, since I've been back home in KY......my wonderful Great Pyrenees/Borzoi cross, and my purebred Borzoi, both to cancer. One terrific horse to colic, (the only one still rideable. I have a couple of 30 yr old's). Several cats. We have a whole Pet Semetary on the hill going up to the barn, that also contains ducks and chickens. I regularly stop to say Hi, and shed some more tears.
Got another Great Pyrenees pup who will be a year old next month. She is a great joy, and helped patch a big hole in our hearts. Now, if we could just get her to stop chewing everything up!
So sorry for your loss........I also recommend what others have said. A new dog can help you heal.

(50,273 posts)Sometimes I think it's harder to get over the loss of our animals than it is to get over the loss of a human family member. Maybe it's because they always give their unqualified and undying love and loyalty with no questions asked. I don't think a day goes by that I don't remember long gone cats and wish I could just bring them back for one more hug.

(2,193 posts)After I lost my two Golden's a year apart from cancer, I didn't think I could get another dog but I joined a rescue group that snatched them from death row from kill shelters. I got stuck with a foster that was not beautiful like my late dogs but I have come to love him so much because of his fierce loyalty to me and his gratitude for being rescued. He somehow knew his number was nearly up.
In 2008, I shattered my ankle and was operated on. I was on disability from work for 3 months and had to withdraw from opoids. This feral cat adopted me and has been with me since them. I am happy for every day I have with them. I will give them a good death. And then I will give another creature a chance at life and happiness. So they will pick you out when you need them the most. It may not be a puppy or a kitten but they will find you and fill the void.
