World's 'oldest dog' Maggie dies peacefully, sleeping in her basket

Maggie the Kelpie believed to be the world's oldest dog, passed away while asleep in her basket Sunday night.

Maggie, who belonged to Australian dairy farmer, Brian McLaren, was 30 at the time of her death. That's approximately 200 in human years. According to McLaren, Maggie had been happy and healthy up until two days before her death, when she began to deteriorate.

"She was still going along nicely last week," McLaren told local newspaper The Weekly Times. "She was walking from the dairy to the office and growling at the cats and all that sort of thing."

Though McLaren doesn't have any birth certificates for Maggie, he argues that he purchased her four years after his 34-year-old son's birth.

There was a video at the link. What a sweetie. I love all dogs but old dogs are just the best. I almost cried reading this. Our dogs are still young since we lost all our dogs in a short period of time because they all grew old together.

How are your kitties? My feral that comes in twice a day to eat and get some loving turned on me yesterday, hooked my hand and ripped one of those large vessels. It is swollen and blue today. Don't know what got into him but he was back by nightfall, I just let him go without the petting, lol. I can get back to that tonight. What gets into them? He is a looker.

In this article, they calculate a 30 year-old dog as over 200 human years.

But a vet told me that the modern calculation is:

Each of first three dog years = 12 human years (each)

All succeeding dog years = 3 human years

So, a 30 year-old dog would be:

Age 1 -> 3 = (3 x 12) = 36 years

Age 4 -> 30 = (27 x 3) = 81 years

So, 36 + 81 = 117 years.

That's a little more believable than only one bionic dog living the equivalent of over 200 human years!

So if your dog is 10
years:

3 years x 12/yr = 36
7 years x 3/yr = 21

10 year-old dog = 57 year-old person

***

15 year-old dog =
(3x12) + (14x3) = 36 + 42 = 78 year-old person

***

It is more reasonable to think of a 15->17 year dog as a person of about 80 years.

A rancher once told me that all his dogs lived to be at least 20 years -- because he fed them raw meat every day.

So, a 20 year-old dog would be:

(3x12) = 36
(17x3) = 51

87 years-old

****

I believe this conversion ratio makes more sense.

Most people die before 90, and most
dogs die way before 30, so it's not reasonable to believe only one dog would live the equalivalent of 200 human years!

As the calculation shows: 117 years seems more "bionically" realistic and consistent.

Large dogs die sooner than smaller dogs. I don't believe the dog in the OP was 30. No evidence to back it up.

biological "age" is subjective

there are suave and sensual people in their seventies, and disgusting slobs in their forties

middle age is when the phone rings and youre glad it's not for you

That was a border collie. But its pretty unusual for big dogs to make even make it to 15.

Elvis was the happiest, most laid-back dog ever. Unfortunately his arthritis got to the point where there was only one right thing to do for him, and I think it broke my brother's heart. He was no-shit-kidding 20 years old, and the 17 he spent with my brother and SIL are years I wish for all dogs.
