I thought it came down from the cravat.
The cravat was a kind of napkin for the shirt front.
Back in olden times a man might own only one shirt, but he could afford two or three cravats (scraps of cloth) to keep the food and gravy off the front of his one shirt.
Of course he didn't smell very good.
Few did back then.
Bu at least he looked relatively well groomed.
