Virginia Senate fails to overturn veto of Confederate monuments bill

Virginia's Senate has failed to overturn Gov. Terry McAuliffe's veto of a bill .. to prevent local governments from moving Confederate and Civil War monuments.

The GOP-controlled Senate was unable to muster a two-thirds majority to override the .. veto.

McAuliffe said in his veto message last month that communities across Virginia are having "difficult and complicated" discussions about whether to remove symbols of the Confederacy. McAuliffe.. doesn't believe the state should take away localities' ability to make those decisions ...

When an action like this fails by one vote, I always figure there's been lots of backroom negotiating about who gets to vote with the yahoos to save his political skin and who has to stand up for the forces of bright light and human goodness

Proposals to amend the US Constitution, to forbid flag burningm, regularly used to fail by one vote in a chamber
