Yeah, John, Karma can be a real bitch sometimes.
From today's WaPo:
Get well soon, John! So that the hospital staff won't have to put up with your sorry ass much longer.

(12,409 posts)Lower pay, hiring new grad nurses and dump the tenure Nursing, then, provide less staffing....charting is more important than patient care and offer treatment if the insurance will pay for the services....that is just a glimpse of the healthcare damages he supports...now, he lives it.

A lot of people who go through such things usually have more empathy for others. It looks like Mr. Stossel isn't one of them

(82,849 posts)Very odd. His entire career has been to run interference for sleazy companies and their lousy business practices under the libertarian rubric of free market competition. Now he's getting terrible customer service, is he? I'll be he's not feeling well physically with the cancer, maybe he's kind of scared, and he feels sort of beleaguered and alone.
I'd hazard a guess that Stossel the consumer reporter would tell Stossel the health care consumer, "Give me a break!" and badmouth the health care consumer for not taking a more proactive stance to ensure good service, and let the hospital off the hook. I wonder if Stossel will have anything to say about the tobacco company's perfectly legal, addictive, and deadly product that resulted in his lung cancer?

Complains about his, no doubt top of the line, private for profit health care and insurance... but throws the government under the bus.

(14,077 posts)It's not possible that the free-market doesn't provide an optimal solution to his problem. Stop whining and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the market John.

(15,805 posts)In Calif, my HMO plan is one of the largest in the state. I can email my doctor anytime and either he or his chief nurse will respond in a timely manner. I can also email any other department, lookup test results, check prescription warnings, review my treatment plan, schedule appointments, and even lodge a complaint if my concerns aren't met.
Some states (like calif) have tougher laws designed to protect patient rights, while others pass laws to shield the corporations that run the for-profit medical industry.

(4,291 posts)I know that the major hospitals in Jacksonville ask patients -- even outpatients -- for their written feedback right after tests or treatments. Some friends who are professional care-givers have been burned by patients who complain that they don't smile enough when they're trying to undo decades of unhealthy living in one office/ER visit.
As if their jobs aren't difficult enough.

They would be well within their rights to mark in your chart: "this patient's compliance with his treatment plan Stinks!"

(3,252 posts)It was a fact free scree against people who know smoking is addictive. The report had a little bit of anecdotal evidence and zero facts and statistics. Now he has lung cancer. What a shame.

It seems Stossel doesn't like free market healthcare as much as he thought.

So did he have to sit in front of a death panel yet?
This is kinda crazy, he says he's getting exceptional care, but the customer service is bad? I guess he can always get a concierge doctor, I'm sure HE can afford it. Or how about simply change hospitals?

Thanks to Obamacare he can change his carrier, hospital etc even after his diagnosis.
