Republican Proposal Would Restrict Free Meal Programs At Thousands Of America’s Poorest Schools

http://thinkprogress.org/education/2016/04/19/3770765/community-eligibility-rollback-free-school-meals/

Millions of low-income American students could lose access to free school meals under a proposal circulating among House lawmakers....

The changes would take away schoolwide free meals programs from more than 7,000 schools that educate almost 3.4 million students in low-income areas, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports. Another 11,600 schools that have not yet taken advantage of the free meals option for all students would lose access to it under the proposal. Instead of using what’s called Community Eligibility, these schools would have to reinstate individual applications and verification procedures for huge numbers of students.

The draft bill circulating in the House Education and Workforce Committee lists no author. But sources told ThinkProgress that the push to make free meals harder is coming from a specific handful of Republican congressmen on the subcommittee in charge of pre-school, primary, and secondary education issues.

The list includes Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), who has a track record of wild-eyed claims about anti-poverty programs, and Subcommittee Chair Todd Rokita (R-IN), who famously cross-examined a woman who raises her children on a $10.88 hourly wage at a 2014 hearing. Neither congressman's office immediately returned requests for comment on the school food restrictions.

Unbelievable, except that this is just a small part of the extreme right's plan to shrink the power and involvement of government. I.e., the power of "we the people" to act collectively through our government.

Charles Koch: "The only legitimate functions of government are protection of person and property." And, no, school lunches are not protection. Police, fire, and military are.

If you prevent a certain class from using or obtaining any type of financial or social support, then this class will move away from THEIR Community to some Liberal Community. Grapes of wrath scenario.

You accidentally used the word class when you of course meant to use the word race.

No offense intended👍

Many years ago I did volunteer work with ACORN. The C word was used time and time again when I did impromptu surveys or neighborhood information research. Using the C word is much more polite than other racial or negative character descriptions uttered by many older home owners or renters.

I can see the reason for your use of the word and at its heart your post nails it. I just think when Republicans take actions like this they are being explicitly racist. Actually, I know they are as I used to be one and still work with them.

Racism is why we do not have European Style social benefits, but that is an entirely different OP.

a Bill in the House cutting School Lunches for under privileged and at risk children. Short story, grew up in a small village in North Western Wisconsin,we had one of the first Hot Lunch Programs in the Nation. And that was 1945,and it was free. Our small school district thought it was important that every one had a hot lunch at noon. Mostly because of many students could not afford even bag lunches at the time, because of War Time Rationing. One of the Teachers in our School was in the Quarter Masters in the Local Guard Unit, and he was able to procure Surplus Food items for free and that was the Genesis of our Lunch Program and from that it was used State Wide. Now it is a Federal School Program to prevent hunger and malnutrition as well as learning disabilities. So Friggin tired of the Rethugs and their Dog Whistle messages against struggling families.

Was that the beginning of the national school lunch program? And that story really shows that one person can make a big difference. Or one small community. Thanks.

other Schools in our County adopted this idea at about the same time. The depression of the Thirties wiped out the Lumber industry in our area and it never came back. All that remained was subsistence Dairy Farmers. Most of the Male population eighteen and over were drafted in the early Forties with few ever returning to their hometown roots. When 1945 came along,we still were in the Great Depression and dealing with War time rationing until about 1948 before it was ended in our Region. Economic vitality really did not happen until the late fifties.

A small populated school district in Texas started getting a windfall of tax money because of a largre industrial structure was built in their district.

They did a lot of useful things with the new money and was was free lunches for EVERYONE. They did that for couple of years until the great state of Texas to them to stop paying for all the meals.

When your plane lands in Texas, set your watch back 100 years.

20. Juxtapose this with the current Republican fetish for bathroom bills
Fri Apr 22, 2016, 12:49 AM
Apr 2016

Sen. Cruz claimed he is in favor of the bathroom bills being promulgated because he's so worried about the safety of our nation's little girls.

Here's an idea or two, Senator:

If you're as worried about the safety and welfare of our nation's children, such that a thousand state bills are blooming to combat a non-existent problem, how about passing some legislation that directly benefits little girls and little boys? Like, say, a boost to the minimum wage so that the parents of little boys and little girls can afford to feed, clothe and house them? Or a really big boost so they can spend more time with their children instead of working two or three jobs to piece together a livable budget?

You could pass an education bill that improves our nation's schools, hires more teachers, reduces class sizes, and delivers a world class education so our nation's little boys and little girls can compete with their peers around the world?
