(3,089 posts)"WASHINGTON Hillary Clinton in a speech on Thursday called for universal, automatic voter registration, saying every citizen in the country should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they opt-out.
Clinton spoke at Texas Southern University in Houston, where she was receiving the Barbara Jordan Public-Private Leadership Award. She also said Republican-led efforts in several states to further regulate voting and voter registration disproportionately harm both underrepresented communities and young people, adding that Republicans need to stop fear mongering about the phantom epidemic of voter fraud."

(3,089 posts)POSTED BY EVE ROBERT ON NOVEMBER 24, 2008
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has said she plans to introduce a bill to move toward automatic voter registration. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, officials in several states, including Minnesota, Oregon and New York, have expressed interest in implementing such a system at a state level. In "universal" voter registration systems (often called "automatic" or "state-initiated" systems), the government takes the lead in ensuring that all eligible citizens are registered to vote. The United States is one of the few democracies where the government does not take any responsibility in registering its voters: electors must take the initiative and register themselves to vote (and also update their registration details when they move). Many myths exist about the current U.S. system of self-initiated voter registration:

(145,291 posts)The Clinton platform is one of the best set of proposals to protect the right to vote that I have seen and this is one of my passions. https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/voting-rights/
Repairing the Voting Rights Act. Congress should move quickly to pass legislation that would fix the damage done to the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court and restore the full protections American voters need and deserve. These protections are crucial for young and minority voters, seniors, and other underrepresented groups disproportionately affected by harmful Republican efforts to restrict voting.
Setting a new national standard for early voting. Its time to set a standard across our country of at least 20 days of early in-person voting, including opportunities for evening and weekend voting. This will reduce long lines and give more people an opportunity to vote, especially those who have work or family obligations during the day. Early in-person voting isnt just convenientits also more secure, more reliable, and more affordable than absentee voting.
Implementing universal, automatic voter registration. Every citizen in every state should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they choose to opt out. At the same time, we need to make sure that registration rolls are secure, up to date, and accurate. When you move, your registration should move with you. Modernizing registration will add tens of millions of voters to the rolls, cost less, and reduce the potential for errors or irregularities.

(145,291 posts)Marc Elias, the chief counsel for the Clinton Victory Counsel program, is busy suing the GOP and fighting GOP vote suppression http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/16/voting-rights-lawsuits-_n_7594960.html
The attorney, Marc Elias, is involved in lawsuits challenging measures passed in Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, arguing that laws cutting back early voting, restricting registration and requiring photo identification to vote, among other measures, disproportionately impact racial minorities.
Conservatives have argued such measures protect against voter fraud, and have called the lawsuits a political effort to energize Democratic voters. The financial involvement of the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros, who is supporting the suits, has only incensed them further.
There are high stakes to the lawsuits, as the Supreme Court displayed a certain skepticism about federal voting rights legislation when it struck down a key section of the landmark Voting Rights Act in 2013. That provision had required states and localities with a history of voting discrimination to first clear any changes to their voting laws with the federal government or in federal court. The VRA still bars voting procedures that discriminate against racial minorities, but the strength of that section hasnt been tested since the courts controversial decision two years ago.
So, while the politics of Elias cases have attracted most of the attention Clinton recently decried measures supported by Republican governors, like fellow presidential hopeful Scott Walker of Wisconsin there is an equivalent amount of intrigue on the legal side. Some of the provisions targeted in the lawsuits, like Wisconsins voter identification law, have already been challenged, while others, like Virginias photo ID law, havent yet seen the inside of a courtroom.
The GOP is very good at voter suppression and I am glad that Marc is fighting against the GOP. Marc is the lead attorney if five major cases on voting rights in Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and not Arizona. The Wisconsin voter id case goes to trial in May.
In addition, Clinton has attacked various GOP candidates on their record on voting rights. For example http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/04/opinions/brazile-hillary-clinton/index.html
Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed into law a piece of legislation that slashed early voting and ended same-day registration in the state. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's editorial board even said the legislation was "a breathtaking bid to suppress voting despite constitutional guarantees of voting rights."
I think that it is clear that voting rights are an important issue for the Clinton campaign. I am not really sure how much more Clinton can do until the general election.

(31,828 posts)I was pointing out - if what bill is saying is true - then that's one hell of a long game on HRC's part. It doesn't make sense that Democat would be a "paid shill" for the Clinton campaign since 2001. We weren't even internet focused for her Senate run- which I was happy to knock on doors, make calls, and get people registered for in 2000. I was only pointing out an article talking about what Clinton's campaign does. It pays people to troll the internet which is not giving their personal opinions while pretending they are. It's much like her practice of buying fake facebook or instagram friends to boost numbers. Ive been tempted to do this for my own business but I shy away from phoniness and it always backfires anyway. Most of the sock-puppet profiles here are from military and NSA contracting also...they are the ones that have been exposed in numerous investigative journalism articles from reputable publications. However, even though Im sure almost all profiles here are real people I wouldnt use the amount of comments or years around as a qualifier...the articles I read say they have more comments because its a full time job and sometimes they get outed because they comment 24/7 because each profile has multiple managers and shifts.

(145,291 posts)Automatic registration means that new voters who get their drivers license are automatically registered unless they opt out. People who not getting drivers licenses http://sos.oregon.gov/voting/Pages/motor-voter.aspx
How it Works
Automatic voter registration is available if you are eligible* to register to vote and you apply for your original, renewal, or replacement license, permit, or ID card at the DMV.
Once you engage the Oregon Motor Voter process by visiting the DMV, you will receive a card and a pre-paid postage return envelope from the Oregon State Elections Office.
With this card, you have three options:
Do nothing. You will be registered to vote as a nonaffiliated voter (not a member of a political party).
Choose a political party by returning the card. Joining a political party will allow you to vote in its primary elections.
Use the card to opt-out and decline to register to vote.
Once registered, you will automatically receive a ballot and instructions in the mail about two weeks before an election. When you vote, your ballot is secret and your choices cannot be matched up with your name.
Oregon is a closed primary and ballots will be mailed only to voters who indicated that they are members of the Democratic Party on or before 21 days prior to the primary.
Does anyone want to bet how many people forget to register as democrats? Again, you can vote in the general election without regard to party affiliation so long as you are registered as described above.
BTW, the Oregon law is wonderful but it is still tied to people getting Drivers' license or who are otherwise in the system. As part of the process, the voter still affirmatively has to elect to affiliate with a political party on or before 21 days prior to the primary
