"WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton in a speech on Thursday called for universal, automatic voter registration, saying every citizen in the country should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they opt-out.

Clinton spoke at Texas Southern University in Houston, where she was receiving the Barbara Jordan Public-Private Leadership Award. She also said Republican-led efforts in several states to further regulate voting and voter registration disproportionately harm both underrepresented communities and young people, adding that Republicans need to “stop fear mongering” about the “phantom epidemic” of voter fraud."

POSTED BY EVE ROBERT ON NOVEMBER 24, 2008

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has said she plans to introduce a bill to move toward automatic voter registration. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, officials in several states, including Minnesota, Oregon and New York, have expressed interest in implementing such a system at a state level. In "universal" voter registration systems (often called "automatic" or "state-initiated" systems), the government takes the lead in ensuring that all eligible citizens are registered to vote. The United States is one of the few democracies where the government does not take any responsibility in registering its voters: electors must take the initiative and register themselves to vote (and also update their registration details when they move). Many myths exist about the current U.S. system of self-initiated voter registration:

77. Automatic voter registration is part of Clinton's voting rights platform
Thu Apr 21, 2016, 09:55 PM
Apr 2016

The Clinton platform is one of the best set of proposals to protect the right to vote that I have seen and this is one of my passions. https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/voting-rights/

Hillary has laid out her vision for how to expand access to the ballot box for all Americans and how to defend against the systematic, deliberate efforts to stop millions of citizens from participating in our democracy:

Repairing the Voting Rights Act. Congress should move quickly to pass legislation that would fix the damage done to the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court and restore the full protections American voters need and deserve. These protections are crucial for young and minority voters, seniors, and other underrepresented groups disproportionately affected by harmful Republican efforts to restrict voting.

Setting a new national standard for early voting
. It’s time to set a standard across our country of at least 20 days of early in-person voting, including opportunities for evening and weekend voting. This will reduce long lines and give more people an opportunity to vote, especially those who have work or family obligations during the day. Early in-person voting isn’t just convenient—it’s also more secure, more reliable, and more affordable than absentee voting.

Implementing universal, automatic voter registration. Every citizen in every state should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they choose to opt out. At the same time, we need to make sure that registration rolls are secure, up to date, and accurate. When you move, your registration should move with you. Modernizing registration will add tens of millions of voters to the rolls, cost less, and reduce the potential for errors or irregularities.

95. Voting Rights will be an issue in the general election and the Clinton campaign has been active
Fri Apr 22, 2016, 01:29 AM
Apr 2016

Marc Elias, the chief counsel for the Clinton Victory Counsel program, is busy suing the GOP and fighting GOP vote suppression http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/16/voting-rights-lawsuits-_n_7594960.html

The general counsel for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign is heading up three high-profile lawsuits against Republican-backed voting restrictions in what is shaping up to be a perfect political and legal storm leading up to the 2016 election.

The attorney, Marc Elias, is involved in lawsuits challenging measures passed in Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, arguing that laws cutting back early voting, restricting registration and requiring photo identification to vote, among other measures, disproportionately impact racial minorities.

Conservatives have argued such measures protect against voter fraud, and have called the lawsuits a political effort to energize Democratic voters. The financial involvement of the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros, who is supporting the suits, has only incensed them further.

There are high stakes to the lawsuits, as the Supreme Court displayed a certain skepticism about federal voting rights legislation when it struck down a key section of the landmark Voting Rights Act in 2013. That provision had required states and localities with a history of voting discrimination to first clear any changes to their voting laws with the federal government or in federal court. The VRA still bars voting procedures that discriminate against racial minorities, but the strength of that section hasn’t been tested since the court’s controversial decision two years ago.

So, while the politics of Elias’ cases have attracted most of the attention — Clinton recently decried measures supported by Republican governors, like fellow presidential hopeful Scott Walker of Wisconsin — there is an equivalent amount of intrigue on the legal side. Some of the provisions targeted in the lawsuits, like Wisconsin’s voter identification law, have already been challenged, while others, like Virginia’s photo ID law, haven’t yet seen the inside of a courtroom.

The GOP is very good at voter suppression and I am glad that Marc is fighting against the GOP. Marc is the lead attorney if five major cases on voting rights in Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and not Arizona. The Wisconsin voter id case goes to trial in May.

In addition, Clinton has attacked various GOP candidates on their record on voting rights. For example http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/04/opinions/brazile-hillary-clinton/index.html

Sen. Ted Cruz, son of a Cuban immigrant, introduced federal legislation that would have required voters to present "proof of citizenship" before casting their ballots in elections for federal office. This measure would have amended the National Voter Registration Act.....

Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed into law a piece of legislation that slashed early voting and ended same-day registration in the state. The Cleveland Plain Dealer's editorial board even said the legislation was "a breathtaking bid to suppress voting despite constitutional guarantees of voting rights."

I think that it is clear that voting rights are an important issue for the Clinton campaign. I am not really sure how much more Clinton can do until the general election.

For the post you are responding to. I think - you should put the person on ignore. You two can't be reasonable with one another. Agree to disagree and put each other on ignore until this November.

Even if they are a paid troll by Clinton campaign which admitted to this practice, military contractors or are just plain stupid. I alerted the comment to test the jury system. It's my first alert in 5 years. Clintonites ALWAYS alert if I question their credentials as do virulent NSA supporters in the old Snowden discussion. As usual all those groups have hypocritical double standards. That's why the aforementioned make me want to puke.

I was pointing out - if what bill is saying is true - then that's one hell of a long game on HRC's part. It doesn't make sense that Democat would be a "paid shill" for the Clinton campaign since 2001. We weren't even internet focused for her Senate run- which I was happy to knock on doors, make calls, and get people registered for in 2000. She was hip deep in the Senate in 2001 and probably didn't even know this site existed.

Thanks for posting the results though.

I was only pointing out an article talking about what Clinton's campaign does. It pays people to troll the internet which is not giving their personal opinions while pretending they are. It's much like her practice of buying fake facebook or instagram friends to boost numbers. Ive been tempted to do this for my own business but I shy away from phoniness and it always backfires anyway. Most of the sock-puppet profiles here are from military and NSA contracting also...they are the ones that have been exposed in numerous investigative journalism articles from reputable publications. However, even though Im sure almost all profiles here are real people I wouldnt use the amount of comments or years around as a qualifier...the articles I read say they have more comments because its a full time job and sometimes they get outed because they comment 24/7 because each profile has multiple managers and shifts.

Many of us are sick of both Sanders and Clinton supporters turning the entire DU forum into something that resembles a Rush Limbaugh fan site.

This is a thread about Oregon allowing more people to vote, not about how much you hate Clinton or Sanders.

We are here to elect Democrats, not to trash them and help Trump.

Sorry but free speech zones are a Republican idea. You call yourself a Democrat. I personally can't stand Either Clinton because of their intimacy with the Bush family and their lying about it in the 80s and 90s until they didn't care anymore after 2000. I am disgusted by them. Try looking up what free speech is about. Life isn't a game or just about winning.

You are free to post on whatever anti-Democratic website you prefer.

This site was created to support Democrats, not to trash them.

The only reason you are able to get away with what you're doing is because the admins have decided not to ban people who hate Democrats until the nomination process is over.

And you love Clinton so does that mean you love Bush also? Can you actually answer a question or do you just make wild accusations and disrupt which is a common tactic of those who pretend to be one thing but are quite another. By your moniker it's obvious you really really really want is to believe you're a Democrat so I'm very curious to know what your stance is of the close relationship between the Bushes and Clintons. And please don't tell me that ex presidents are just part of a club that like to hang out with each other. Jimmy Carter does not. Truman and FDR did not.

76. But they still have to register their party affiliation on or before 21 days before the primary
Thu Apr 21, 2016, 09:51 PM
Apr 2016

Automatic registration means that new voters who get their drivers license are automatically registered unless they opt out. People who not getting drivers licenses http://sos.oregon.gov/voting/Pages/motor-voter.aspx

How it Works
Automatic voter registration is available if you are eligible* to register to vote and you apply for your original, renewal, or replacement license, permit, or ID card at the DMV.

Once you engage the Oregon Motor Voter process by visiting the DMV, you will receive a card and a pre-paid postage return envelope from the Oregon State Elections Office.

With this card, you have three options:

Do nothing. You will be registered to vote as a nonaffiliated voter (not a member of a political party).
Choose a political party by returning the card. Joining a political party will allow you to vote in its primary elections.
Use the card to opt-out and decline to register to vote.

Once registered, you will automatically receive a ballot and instructions in the mail about two weeks before an election. When you vote, your ballot is secret and your choices cannot be matched up with your name.

Oregon is a closed primary and ballots will be mailed only to voters who indicated that they are members of the Democratic Party on or before 21 days prior to the primary.

Does anyone want to bet how many people forget to register as democrats? Again, you can vote in the general election without regard to party affiliation so long as you are registered as described above.

BTW, the Oregon law is wonderful but it is still tied to people getting Drivers' license or who are otherwise in the system. As part of the process, the voter still affirmatively has to elect to affiliate with a political party on or before 21 days prior to the primary

Why more states haven't adopted it I have no idea. We get a brochure in the mail awhile before the elections and read about the candidates and ballot measures, with arguments for and against listed by contributors, we can talk about things for awhile, then we get our ballots in the mail and have a couple weeks to get them in. My daughter got her first ballot when she had turned 18, didn't have to register or anything.

It's automatic voter registration, not automatic party registration.

You have to be pro-active in declaring your party.

Oregonians can change or declare their party affiliation ONLINE, at least 21 days before an election (it used to be 6 months). They need to go here

But I suspect the only way to get a specific party's primary ballot, is to be registered in that party.

Our entire state is vote by mail, so everyone gets their ballot mailed to them.

You have until 21 days ptio to primary to register before the primary as a democrat if you want democratic ballot mailed to you. The state does not mKl ballots for both party's primary to each voter. This can be done online but still has to be done

I am especially pissed off about these closed primaries (e.g. NY). You have to be an avowed member of one of two awful clubs to participate. I suppose they're concerned that the 2 party system will disintegrate if the people actually have this thing called "free will".

And, open primaries?

Because I'd hate to have thousands and thousands of people be told when they go to vote that they have opted out and can't vote on election day. And, if voting databases are hackable, that could (and would) certainly happen if TPTB felt threatened.

Or, that they are not registered with the Dem Party so can't have their voice heard during the very important primary process.
