What do they say about us as a culture, at places like DU, Facebook, Twitter, etc... ?
Do that many of us fail to realize that everyone else already know? And, if so, does that mean we are really not paying attention at all?
Something is amiss No?
How do we help each other pay attention to each other?
Or are we just too dang narcissistic?
I have to wonder.

(19,564 posts)I don't follow TMZ myself, so I didn't know until I saw it here. Which was some time before my first push came across my phone, and I do follow NPR. 😀

(36,434 posts)to see who scoops whom first, DU or NPR. Generally, DU is a whopping ten minutes ahead of NPR on breaking news stories. It is also our observation, NPR and DU mirror each other perfectly on all the news that is important to us.

(19,564 posts)At least from what I've been able to discern, it was the original DU source.

No. I will not. Go figure it out yourself.

(31,464 posts)Two or three days later, eleventy-seven posts about the subject, and someone comes on and says "OMG! Did you hear that (insert name here) died!?" Meanwhile, Time has already put a special commemorative edition on the shelf at the grocery store.

(35,773 posts)Even then I jump the gun, but I admit it when it happens. It seems basic.

(5,764 posts)Do you really think all the people who are responding to the news of his death are narcissistic? A lack of empathy is a defining characteristic of narcissistic personality disorder. Empathy for others is one of the defining characteristics of liberalism.

I think it's silly to have 14 threads on the same subject. Just clutters up the board.

I'm not disparaging Prince at all; I was a fan back in the day.

I'm sad about Prince. Never knew the man personally, I didn't hear the news until way later in the day because I was in surgery with a full roster of patients today.
Is that okay? I mean to want to see and hear this type of news that is not "breaking'? Many of us do not spend all of our lives online every minute of the day.

(19,564 posts)They gravitate to place where they believe like minded people will be more if it's a death, over a joyous event.
We deal with death oddly, myself included. I'm not sure how to explain it exactly, but I do see people drawn to places they feel safest/most comfortable when one occurs they want to talk about.
FSogol
(45,485 posts)everyone in the bar is excited and everyone explains exactly what they saw happen and what their reaction was. It is stupid since everyone was there, but people have a need to explain it anyway.
Spreading the news of something like a celebrity death is similar to that. People want to belong to the shared culture and be a part of what is happening.
My 2 cents.

Lots of posts on the same topic is a good thing. Makes it look busier.
Or how about trashing threads with the word "Prince" in it. There's a way to do that. But then you'd miss the many threads about Good Prince Bandar.

(4,138 posts)Most other forums that I read have a big Prince megathread going on, and their mods will consolidate and lock any other threads outside it. DU has always been bad about tons of identical threads popping up to any big news item.
ronnie624
(5,764 posts)Smaller threads are easier to manage and seem to offer different aspects of a given topic. I won't even click on a thread anymore, once it reaches a certain size. The exaggerations being invoked over the number of threads on this topic, are much sillier, in my opinion.
