Easily one of the best rocknroll guitar players of all time, maybe in the top 5, think about what that means.
Played how many instruments? 12 I think.
Wrote songs that are masterpieces.
Performed them equally.
The guy was one of the greatest musicians, songwriters of all time, in a very very small group of unique and wonderful talents.
Gonna really miss him.
Makes me now wonder where Rolling Stone ranked him when they did the all time guitar players.
Just looked at Rolling Stone, that list is embarrassing. They got some of it right but most of it way wrong.

(4,176 posts)it is not just playing the notes, but like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, he is writing music that has never been heard before and then he plays it like a fucking mad man.

(31,849 posts)besides the fact that he developed a sound that had not been previously heard ... was that, and how, he walked away from the music industry. I'm pretty sure, his detailing his treatment in the industry, led many musicians to take a good look at their contracts before they signed them.

(1,890 posts)I played the hell out of the Purple Rain album. My neighbors even complained because I played it LOUD. lol I watched the Purple Rain movie over and over - not for the acting, because it was bad. I watched it to see him play and move across the stage. It was beautiful.

(129,062 posts)his self-titled album, that came out when I was a senior in HS (and that my sis had gotten as a present). was where he played all of the instruments on it. And another fun fact about that album is that the song that Chaka Khan made famous - "I Feel for You" was his and was a slow song!

There aren't many songs that I recall vividly the first time I heard them but this is definitely one of them.
I was driving and I remember staring at the radio, amazed at the what I was hearing. First, there is no bass. NO BASS. The entire arrangement is fascinating because it's sparse and open while being intricate and detailed.
The drums. The keyboards. The vocals.
The vocals.
How many different voices was he using? How many layers to create that sound.
That song changed everything.
I join all my friends in our sorrow at the loss of such an artist. Glad to see he is getting the accolades he deserves and I hope he knew how much we all loved him.
Thank god we still have his music.

(9,086 posts)But it wasn't just a gimmick. He had a very creative and individualist personality and he let it shine through and that was awesome.
He just was a very special guy and a great musician. A really good guitar player but he did so many other things. A true original. A great artist. Great songwriter. It's a sad thing.

(9,116 posts)He also refused to put up with the typical record label bullshit, and managed to exercise complete control over his art. Without him, we wouldn't have guys like Trent Reznor shaking things up.

(3,702 posts)I was in high school when 1999 came out, and wow - that changed my world.
I was lucky to see him perform live and just so much freaking talent packed into one little purple one.
Watching him play guitar - it becomes a whole different instrument in his hands.
I am not a musician, just a music lover and the loss of Prince in this world sucks. I am just blessed to have grown up listening to his music and being a fan.

(10,201 posts)to another. Prince was an enigma.
He created himself.
I look at it like this... His music, his style, his sexual appeal, were all pulled from from unique and magical material from far off in the cosmos. There is none like him, and he was like no other.
