http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/gop-primaries/277109-kasich-suggests-he-opposes-dc-voting-rights-because-thats-justDuring a meeting with the Washington Post editorial board, Kasich was asked about his vote against statehood for the District while he was in Congress and whether that was still his position.
Yes, I would say it probably is, he said, according to a transcript of the meeting....
What it really gets down to, if you want to be honest, is because they know thats just more votes in the Democratic Party, Kasich said.
Ah yes, the sane, reasonable one.

points (I think those #s are right) but only 4 of the 15 Congressional seats were won by Ds
because of gerrymandering. So we had more people voting for democrats but we got more
republicans elected to the House. Kasich and the Ohio Republicans know they are cheating
and cutting out democratic votes (ALEC's plan for gerrymandering) and they don't care and
good old John is down on his knees praying to JEEBUZ to give him wisdom.

Of course, he was one of the founding members of ALEC, we always knew that, but he has a major foot-in-mouth problem.
The more I read of his comments, the genuinely more stupid and arrogant he sounds. Another W, complete with religion. He clearly believes that he's wiser and more principled than most people, especially women and minorities, including as we now know Jewish scholars. And, as a server of God, he also has an authoritarian duty to help us immoral slobs turn in the right direction. The one he chooses for us.

(2,382 posts)... honesty has anything to do with it. He's a Republican, for chrissake; he's congenitally incapable of discerning the truth, never mind telling it. Insufferable arrogance from knowing that the power structure protects him no matter WHAT the fuck he says or does, is far more likely.

If more people vote, Democrats will win more in the long run, even if every single small decision doesn't benefit us. Why? Because Democrats today are on the right side of history compared to Republicans.

The people who live in D.C. feel they are not represented properly, and
they are asking to be given the full and equal rights of statehood -- along
with reps and senators. Sadly, this would require action by the legislature,
which is presently incapable of making a non-partisan ruling. But, public
opinion should be framed in response to this question: Do the people of D.C.
deserve statehood and congressional representation ? ... regardless of which
party may benefit.
It is much less egregious than gerrymandering, which favors the R's
all over the country.

Seriously, Puerto Rico's population exceeds something like 22 current states. Don't these Americans deserve representation?

The Republican party in PR has always been the "statehood party" while the Democratic Party has traditionally been the 'commonwealth party" with the extreme left the "independence party".

(3,167 posts)There are 675,000 people who live in Washington, DC... more than in the entire states of Wyoming and Vermont. It is absolutely un-American that they do not have representation in the House and the Senate. I understand the political side of this - for years, the Republican solution was to add them to Maryland, which is already a blue state, and the Democratic solution was to add them to Virginia and turn that state blue. In the meantime, though, the growth of the suburbs of DC in Virginia has effectively already turned Virginia blue. What's the solution? I think we should have this discussion in the broader context of increasing the size of the House. I think we need many, many more Congressional districts. After the next census in 2020, we will see many states whose population has increased, but who will lose House seats because the population didn't increase fast enough. I think that the solution for DC would be to let the residents of DC vote for Senators in Maryland; and then we increase the size of the House and give DC its own House member, as well as adding 100 (?) seats to the House. The Repubs, of course, will be against this but history is on OUR side - the size of the House was routinely increased after each census until 1920, when it wasn't done - and guess who was in charge of Congress at the time?? Yep, the Republicans, who also passed the law in 1929 fixing the size of the House at 435. I don't know what the ideal size would be, but I'm guessing that adding 100 seats would be a good number!
KamaAina
(78,249 posts)The solution would be to give her a vote.

(3,167 posts)That was kinda my point. She has no vote. Republicans will never vote to allow a single seat, though.

(9,267 posts)There is nothing in the constitution limiting the size of the House. The artificial limit of 435 came about in large part to contain the power of the Eastern states, especially the big cities, which were seeing a huge influx of European immigrants at the time. And most of those European immigrants were from "drinking" countries and cultures and were opposed to Prohibition, which was the #1 huge issue in 1920.
A much larger Congress would also be harder to gerrymander.
Kasich is a vile asshole who, in this case, had the common Republican lapse of forgetting his filter.
