of the issue of the Harriet Tubman $20, we will have news stories about the bill being defaced with racial slurs. The dateline will be Texas or South Carolina.

(17,469 posts)it's just more visceral in the South. And I say that as someone who has lived in there most of his life.

(68,918 posts)I have ever seen happened in Grand Rapids, MI. The most diversity, with neighbors of different races, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds living in the same neighborhood has been here in Houston. You'll excuse me if I find your comment incorrect.

I have lived in Philly, West Virgina, Virgina, North and South Carolina and two years in Switzerland. The racism in the Southern states (small to mid-size towns) is casual and pervasive.
YMMV.

(72,790 posts)My friend works at a bar there. The patrons are bigots, and make no apologizes for it. Sexist, racist, homophobic bigots. And this area is racially and ethinically diverse. And in a blue state.

(37,748 posts)I think you're confusing 'visceral' with 'obvious'. I think racism in the south is merely more obvious, yet equatable, both in content and volume, with the north.

(17,469 posts)it is in their soul and sinews. It is a deep-seated belief. If I had a nickel for every time I have heard the sentence "I'm not a racist but...{Insert Racist Statement Here}, I could buy a politician.

(17,469 posts)Pressure is already building to issue it sooner, before or during 2020.

(10,201 posts)The media initially reported that way, however the Secretary stated that they are going to expedite the release of the bill.
"Due to security needs, the redesigned $10 note is scheduled to go into circulation next. I have directed the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to work closely with the Federal Reserve to accelerate work on the new $20 and $5 notes. Our goal is to have all three new notes go into circulation as quickly as possible, while ensuring that we protect against counterfeiting through effective and sophisticated production."
He's pushing to have all 3 new notes out by 2020.. the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment.

(10,201 posts)However, I personally doubt it will take 14 years. I feel the next administration (under Bernie or Hillary) will continue to expedite it. That is unless Repubs take another majority and push to cut funds to the Treasury to kill it. That is if they can be bothered with their 215th failed attempt at repealing the ACA and the 50 or so more Benghazi hearings we are looking forward to.
