Oregon Takeover Update: Birders Win, Thugs Lose

by Tina Casey on Monday, Apr 25th, 2016

The law of unintended consequences is hard at work in the aftermath of the notorious occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County, Oregon, by Arizona businessman Ammon Bundy and his gang of armed thugs. Bundy accomplished none of his purported goals and is now behind bars facing serious criminal charges along with his cohorts.

Conservation: 1, Thugs: 0

Bundy’s stated goal was to turn the refuge over to local ranchers, loggers and miners. But instead he set off a surge of public support for national parks in general and the Malheur refuge in particular.

After the occupation began, a pair of Oregon brothers started an online fundraiser for the refuge and three other groups that drew more than $135,000 in pledges. That was just the start.

In the latest development, Oregon’s Bend Bulletin newspaper reports that the local conservation group Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge received $75,000 in new memberships and donations after the incident began early in January. The organization was also inundated with hundreds of new volunteer pledges.

to the national and state parks, overpaying fees to the "pole" ranger, as if I'm arriving via van packed with visitors. My way of tipping the parks and saying I want you to be there tomorrow, because I understand that they're under GOP attack and I appreciate them being there now. Every little bit helps.

And voting for democrats also ensures our parks will be open and maintained. Every election is the most important election.

... of Ayn Rand-inspired conservatives was exposed for all to see. No decent human being could have the slightest sympathy for their utterly diseased view of the world. The sooner Rand's bumper-sticker "philosophy" – and her sociopathic sycophants – are universally reviled and flushed back into the cesspool that spawned them, the better off everyone, and everything, on the entire planet will be.

and you are correct about the mess but would add that they leave a trail of that sort wherever they go.

Oh geeze, I live in the middle of mormonland and as I listen to the mormon NPR station there was just now an announcememt that the newest temple, about an hour from me, is to have the statue if moroni on it in a day or two. (Recall that one of the morans claimed to be Capt. moroni)... suddenly it all makes sense!

Here's a report by a Malheur Refuge volunteer of the damage done by the Bundy followers while occupying the bird refuge.

Snip: Oh, guys, it was awful. Outrageous, infuriating, sickening. Just
sheer wanton, deliberate damage and vandalism. They broke into every
single building and office. They didn't just smoke everywhere, they
spit their chewing tobacco spit onto carpets, furniture, even the
personal photos and pictures in the employee's offices. They filled and
stopped up sinks with cigarette butts and rotting food. They flooded
and damaged every single toilet except for the 2 in the Vol bathhouse -
messed them up so badly that some of the had to just be yanked out and
discarded. F&W has a commercial disaster area clean-up company in
working on things, and Carla said even they and the FBI crime scene
investigators were grossed out.

In Carla's office, they couldn't find a key to her building so they
tried to kick in the door. Failing that, they took a crowbar and busted
their way in. They broke into the locked area where the artifacts were
stored, and rummaged thru them (and posted themselves doing it on their
social media - smart!) and moved boxes of them around. It'll have to be
determined if they stole some of them. They tried to use the expensive
big plotter that is used to print the big banners and educational
displays - and broke it. They broke several other printers and stole
computers, cameras, GPS, binoculars, spotting scopes, etc. Carla is
pissed because they stole her "short-fat-lady" (her words, not mine!)
waders, which were expensive ones. Goodness knows how much of the
stored building materials and supplies they stole to resell. The
contents of everyone's office had to be boxed up and put into storage
container units so the repair and clean-up work could commence, so of
course no one can find anything when they want it and aren't sure if
missing things are stolen or just stored.

The jerks went into the 2 Vol cottages and made messes there. Then
they left the outside doors open so mice and other critters got in and
pooped and peed all over the carpets, furniture, everything. Lots of
furniture throughout is just having to be junked. One refrigerator was
so bad it was junked. All the floors are having to be re-carpeted or
refinished. All walls are being repainted. This isn't just the 2
cottages - it's in ALL the offices. They didn't do as much damage to
the Vol rec room, as that's where they let the reporters go. But they
trashed the fire crew bunkhouse.

They should serve an extra 20 years for the vandalism and wanton destruction.
