Another senseless death due to bullying... in our tiny little community...

She was being bullied, and I guess couldn't take any more... at only 13 years old. She was an A/B Honor Roll Student, pitcher for the Middle School softball team, and from a good family that has been left totally devastated.

Please keep the family in your thoughts, prayers, healing vibes, well wishes, or whatever your own personal way is.... I wish I could do more for the family myself....

Rest In Peace, Ashley Marie Ratledge... I'm sorry you couldn't Live In Peace...

I took an oath of non-violence several years ago, but left myself an "out" with the clause "except in cases of self defense, or defense of my family or others", because I cannot STAND a bully, and will stand up for someone else who is getting bullied any time I see it. I am going to talk with the Sheriff's Department, and the Chief of the City Police (who I graduated with) to see how we can start an Anti-Bullying Campaign in the schools. We are like the 2nd or 3rd SMALLEST County in the State, where everyone knows everyone, and half of them are related in some way or another. Several years ago, we had a few bad months where several teens were killed in car crashes in a short period of time. My kids lost 5 or 6 friends in a matter of a couple of months, and it left practically the whole County devastated...

This incident has been bothering me all weekend and today. Thanks for letting me get it off of my chest...

Peace within, Peace between, Peace among....

You might get some ideas from what Michelle Obama did in an anti-bullying campaign. Best of luck to you!

I fully intend to follow through with the County Sheriff's Department and the City Police Department. The Middle School & High School are in the city limits, and a couple of Elementary Schools are outside the city limits, therefore falling under the County's jurisdiction.

We only have 2 full-time City Officers on duty, working 12 hour shifts, and a couple of part-timers so the regular Officers can get a day off. As for the County, on any given night we might have 3 Deputies on duty... 1 to cover the North end, 1 to cover the South end, and a "floater" who stays in the middle, where the City Limits are, to back up either Deputy, or the City Officer on duty. The whole County is around 7 to 8 miles wide and about 35 miles long, with a whole lot of deep, backwoods roads and areas.

I live in a remote area myself, and we have ALL been told by the Sheriff's Department that we are basically on our own. If we catch someone breaking into our homes, or have someone trying to assault us, "just shoot them, or do whatever you have to do to protect yourself because, depending on WHERE the Deputy is, or if he's on another call or otherwise busy, it might be an hour or more before we can respond".

It might be hard, or impossible, to initiate anything due to funding. Most of the funding goes towards the Meth Taskforce and trying to eradicate THAT problem from our County. It's so bad around here that you probably couldn't throw a rock without hitting a tweaker! And everyone wonders *why* I keep to myself, and mainly only hang out with my family?? I have a VERY SMALL circle of friends around here.

Peace,

Ghost
