And all you horders take them to banks so they can be washed and recirculated. Even now I love getting a wheat penny. There already is enough pennies in circulation.

(16,383 posts)Washed all of its coins; they had a coin-washing machine. My grandmother always washed coins before she gave them to us girls, lest we get germs and grime. My mother would role her eyes.

(36,745 posts)Time to eliminate them both and round up or down to nearest ten, just like New Zealand. Money should facilitate commerce, not impede it.
You can wash $1 and $2 coins just as easily.

(2,535 posts)That was told to me by an elderly hardware store owner. Texas had just started the sales tax and we were adjusting to all the pennies. I was about 16 and one day I bought something in their store and was in a hurry and told her to keep the change.
As I was leaving I herd her say, "Young man, pennies make dollars." I have taken that to heart
To me nowdays, it isn't the value of the penny, its my attitude about the penny. I still bend down and pick one up. It isn't the value, its the attitude. If I start disregarding the penny, what will I go to next? If the nickle and the dime become not of value, what is the attitude of your total money and earnings. Do you look for sale items or do you buy something very expensive to impress while not taking care of your other obligations. I quit doing that all because I remember what the woman hardware store told me.
Lets keep the penny until I kick the bucket.

(2,535 posts)have you watched people handle while looking for the best ones. How many times is that done before some are sold.
I really do not like eating from an open plate or glass in a restaurant. Have you seem what is floating in the air. All those "silent" farts and coughs of whatever. What has the table not been cleaned. I have only seen them use damp towels before I am seated. Yeah, there's lots of evil stuff out there. Remember the cook that spit in a guys food that he hated.

(21,786 posts)this has been done elsewhere (British coins were formerly larger than they are now for instance, the five pence piece was reduced in size from 23.5mm (a bit larger than a nickel) to 18mm (slightly larger than a dime). Changing the composition of the penny from copper-plated zinc (zinc spot price: $1700+ per tonne) to copper-plated steel (steel spot price: $50 per tonne) would also reduce production costs (the British penny went from 97% copper to copper-plated steel when copper prices made the older bronze penny unviable).
