The accuser at the center of the Dennis Hastert hush-money case sued the former House Speaker on Monday, saying he never finished paying $3.5 million in cash to settle a sexual abuse allegation.
The man known only as Individual A had only pocketed $1.7 million from the politician when the FBI began investigating red-flag cash withdrawals and learned of their secret deal.
Now, two days before Hastert is to be sentenced for illegal financial transactions, Individual A has filed suit in Illinois state court, seeking to collect the $1.8 million balance.
The five-page breach-of-contract complaint contains new details about the case that stretches back to the 1970s, when Hastert was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School:
Individual A, then 14, was not yet a student at Yorkville when Hastert, a trusted family friend, invited him to a wrestling camp for high schoolers and then molested him in a motel room, the suit says.
In 2008, Individual A had a conversation with another person who said they had been abused by Hastert and that prompted him to confront his former coach, the court papers say. His attorney would not comment on whether that person is one of four former students who prosecutors say have reported abuse, or a new accuser.

(2,957 posts)Not that I'm a fan of Hastert, and I do condemn any form of child molestation, but...why is this not a prosecutable offense of blackmail?
Again, I know that any form of child abuse is unacceptable and wrong and criminal, but, I wonder what people are up to when they conveniently wait until after statutes of limitation have expired before they confront accusers? Could it be a money thing?

(37,748 posts)Prosecutors said that when agents began recording calls between Hastert and the former student, identified only as Individual A, they found his (Individual A) "tone and comments" were inconsistent with extortion and he did not make any threats. Extortion legally requires coercion and/or threat of force/violence to be present, neither of which was found.
As for blackmail, Hasterst has charged that as well, but prosecutors allege, and Hastert has stated when confronted about his misconduct in 2010 that he agreed to pay money to compensate for and conceal his prior misconduct against Individual A, prosecutors alleged.
In other words, Hastert offered hush-money to the victim rather than the victim demanding blackmail.

If Denny Hastert preferred not to pay after the statutes of limitation lapsed he had that option. Didn't he? But his hands were not clean, so he didn't go to the authorities with a complaint. He paid...and the manner in which he paid brought all of this to light.

Zero effing sympathy for poor Denny Hastert.

We all have our flaws, but Dennis Hastert has very few, DeLay wrote to Hasterts sentencing judge. He is a good man that loves the Lord. He gets his integrity and values from Him. He doesnt deserve what he is going through.
DeLay penned one of 41 letters released publicly on Friday in support of Hastert, just days before the Yorkville Republicans sentencing. Included are letters written by Hasterts wife, two of his sons, two of his brothers, former Congressman and head of the Central Intelligence Agency Porter Goss, former Illinois Attorney General Ty Fahner, several ex-congressmen and a few retired law enforcement officers, including retired Kendall County Sheriff Richard Randall and members of the U.S. Capitol Police force.
The letter writers call Hastert, now 74, a great friend, great public servant and great American.

These people just have no moral compass, do they?
