meanwhile back in tennessee: Haslam signs bill giving therapists protections

Gov. Bill Haslam on Wednesday signed into law a controversial bill that says no licensed counselor or therapist must serve a client whose "goals, outcomes or behaviors” conflict with the counselor’s “sincerely held principles” —a measure the American Counseling Association had denounced as a “hate bill” against gay and transgender people.

Senate Bill 1556 also shields from civil lawsuits, criminal prosecution and sanctions by the state licensing board counselors who refuse to provide services — provided they coordinate a referral of the client to another counselor who would serve them.

The bill’s provisions, which go into effect immediately, also will not apply in cases where the person seeking or undergoing counseling is “in imminent danger of harming themselves or others.”

The governor said he spoke with counselors on both sides of the issue and carefully examined the bill’s provisions.

Intense negotiations are going on with a lot of friends who are leaving Tennessee. We all love the state's features and many of the beautiful people here, but no one with half a brain is going to remain in a state that is lurching feverishly toward the 12th century.

Our triple billionaire governor Bill Haslam, who has more money than nearly anyone in this state and could do so many positive things for the poor here, instead has chosen to act like a fucking medieval clown. What corporation with diversity policies is going to locate here now? None.

I feel so sorry for the people of the South. They have no idea how wonderful their states could be, but as long as some non-Christian is getting denied rights and is persecuted they don't care if their teeth are rotting out of their heads and their kids are destined for lives of grinding poverty.

Because Jesus makes oppression, corruption and bigotry a wonderful thing.

Can't wait to get out of here. What a sad and sorry bunch of politicians and voters...

and my apologies to all who will suffer or not seek mental help because of a billionaire's abject GREED and bigotry. But Haslam's christian goons will be happy to add to his billions because he made life harder on the least of these.

Praise their cruel Lard.

The Republicans have done tremendous damage in four short years to this once proudly progressive southern (no, it wasn't an oxymoron) state.
Now they've doubled down with HB 2 after the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land.

The Republican candidate for attorney general was actually caught on video at a pro-HB 2 rally on Monday telling people in attendance
to go home and tell their neighbors and friends how important it was to keep NC "straight". Honest to god.

I've told my husband to expect to see me on a plane to Hawaii (to investigate moving there) the day after the November election if 1--the Dems don't keep the White House;
and 2-Roy Cooper doesn't take the Governor's job away from McCrory here in NC. I'm 65 and I consider that life is getting far too short
to spend the remainder of my years surrounded by bigots and gun nuts.

and the awful truth is that most of these "family values" politicians turn out to be sexual deviants half the time.

One rule for them, another rule for everyone else. I don't believe that most people in the south are bigots, but most of their leaders sure as hell are, and a good many of the people who get out and vote are misled.

They shoot off their noses to spite their faces, and the demographic maps prove it's only causing the south to slide further and further into economic oblivion and creating misery for working people, while the rest of the nation seems to be doing far better.

I love many things about the South, and I love many Southern people, but the politics are draconian and sick, and they can have it.
