Prince was in out-patient program for chronic pain

Sources said Prince was seeing a doctor to help him deal with his chronic hip pain and that part of the out-patient treatment included efforts, by Prince, to move away from using medication prescribed to treat his severe pain. They did not say Prince’s treatment program automatically means he was addicted to controlled substances.

Sources said many people seek out-patient therapy to make sure they do not become addicted to prescribed painkillers and other types of medication and others will seek help when they think they might have symptoms indicating they are starting to become dependent on the drugs and are seeking counseling to help them slowly move away from the medications.

since the article clearly states he was seeking therapy to avoid BECOMING addicted.

True addiction is a rare phenomenon. Dependence is too often conflated with addiction, and there is no evidence he was even dependent.

What it looks like happened was that he'd wait until the pain got so bad he was ready to jump out of his skin and didn't keep track of what he was taking. If people wait until the pain is severe, it always takes more medication to bring it down than it would have if the medication had been taken in a more timely manner, says she who deal with too many Iron Men post surgery with oral drugs backed up by a healthy squirt of morphine into an IV.

His overall profile is of someone in severe chronic pain who was afraid of the drugs used to treat it.

My point stands, however. Pain, pain management, dependence, addiction and other issues are all entwined, and our approach to it sucks.

we spent tons of time talking about 'how does he do it' because he was about our age and we had this list of 'can't no mores' while Prince did it all in those platforms....Purple Rain tour he did these leaps from up high, and he did that stuff for years. It's very similar to the athletes although the sports world.

I made the other bargain after many injuries. I cut out much of what I used to do because the deal they were offering was 'take tons of drugs, keep doing the work' and I figured out that ends with addiction and then early death. The doctors would have given me anything. They did give me anything.

That combined with lifting stretchers has messed up my left knee - it'll probably be both at some point. I feel terrible for him, chronic, unrelenting hip pain must have been horrible. I wish he'd been able to have the surgery he needed. Still so hard to believe he's gone.

Over-using the body is the culprit.

Real large joints in the fingers. Must have hurt a lot worse than mine.

I really think his body was going through some changes and his normal meds probably dropped his blood pressure by too much. I have had that happen a lot lately. I am on the lowest dosage and out of the blue i will almost pass out. I will carefully move to my desk and check my bp and yet it will be something like 70/50. That is what it was on Monday for no real reason, then after a little bit it is back up around 110/80. There are so many things that start happening to ones body when they get older. Especially if they are thin people. Doctors do not ever think thin people have cardiovascular problems.

as my PT told me, by the time I was 35 and have had to continually alter my activities accordingly since. Now facing 60, I have to do numerous stretches and exercises just to get dressed and functional every day. I don't do meds other than IB and the movement. Once I stop moving, I'm done.

How did I use it all up? By throwing 44,000lbs of freight on any given day for 15 years and other bad for my body activities that helped ruin some of my orthopedic anatomy.

RIP, Prince. After watching the incredible moves you had in your shows, I can see how you were in pain after years of doing that.
