Sources said many people seek out-patient therapy to make sure they do not become addicted to prescribed painkillers and other types of medication and others will seek help when they think they might have symptoms indicating they are starting to become dependent on the drugs and are seeking counseling to help them slowly move away from the medications.

(19,339 posts)addiction to controlled substances and died from it anyway, I'm not sure why we expect mere mortals to pull themselves out of addiction using nothing but force of will and maybe a bootstrap or two.

(19,339 posts)or give him whatever he wanted. But even then, he would have been able to do so carefully. One would think.
Warpy
(111,261 posts)since the article clearly states he was seeking therapy to avoid BECOMING addicted.
True addiction is a rare phenomenon. Dependence is too often conflated with addiction, and there is no evidence he was even dependent.
What it looks like happened was that he'd wait until the pain got so bad he was ready to jump out of his skin and didn't keep track of what he was taking. If people wait until the pain is severe, it always takes more medication to bring it down than it would have if the medication had been taken in a more timely manner, says she who deal with too many Iron Men post surgery with oral drugs backed up by a healthy squirt of morphine into an IV.
His overall profile is of someone in severe chronic pain who was afraid of the drugs used to treat it.

(19,339 posts)My point stands, however. Pain, pain management, dependence, addiction and other issues are all entwined, and our approach to it sucks.

(111,261 posts)The punitive approach never works.

(45,319 posts)I am so sorry that he had to endure that pain and that our culture is not more supportive and healing oriented to those who suffer chronic pain.

(268,998 posts)due to chronic pain. All played competitive sports but none performed night after night like Prince.
I can't imagine what he went through with all those gyrations not to mention those high heels.

(77,080 posts)..... I've been to concerts where Janet Jackson, Beyonce and Madonna have all performed in heels for a big portion of the show. I don't get it.

(268,998 posts)but was not prepared to twist my spine or watch the bunions grow. I abandoned high heels at 30 - and told hubby I'd wear them if he wore them as well. I have friends who would die without their high heels -consequences be damned.

(45,319 posts)we spent tons of time talking about 'how does he do it' because he was about our age and we had this list of 'can't no mores' while Prince did it all in those platforms....Purple Rain tour he did these leaps from up high, and he did that stuff for years. It's very similar to the athletes although the sports world.
I made the other bargain after many injuries. I cut out much of what I used to do because the deal they were offering was 'take tons of drugs, keep doing the work' and I figured out that ends with addiction and then early death. The doctors would have given me anything. They did give me anything.

(268,998 posts)always exercised and switched from running, jogging and aerobics to walking and calisthenics - so far so good - I have the odd shoulder pain every now and then, but it stops after exercise. I take a baby aspirin daily. Big pharma would be out of business if they needed me.

(45,319 posts)And I still intend to return to some of my work as I age, they just don't expect older people to take the falls and do the physical stuff like they do with younger people, so by skipping the middle chapters I intend to get a good last act!

(20,582 posts)That combined with lifting stretchers has messed up my left knee - it'll probably be both at some point. I feel terrible for him, chronic, unrelenting hip pain must have been horrible. I wish he'd been able to have the surgery he needed. Still so hard to believe he's gone.
malaise
(268,998 posts)you need one every five years - who could handle that?
polly7
(20,582 posts)I've had more discussions and experience with elderly people who've had replacements, so it's understandable younger people like Prince wouldn't see it in the same way.

(6,344 posts)It all is starting to add up. His last album, Musicology, is he and a piano.
He wanted to keep performing in the way he could with his hip and foot pain.

Over-using the body is the culprit.
LiberalArkie
(15,715 posts)Real large joints in the fingers. Must have hurt a lot worse than mine.
I really think his body was going through some changes and his normal meds probably dropped his blood pressure by too much. I have had that happen a lot lately. I am on the lowest dosage and out of the blue i will almost pass out. I will carefully move to my desk and check my bp and yet it will be something like 70/50. That is what it was on Monday for no real reason, then after a little bit it is back up around 110/80. There are so many things that start happening to ones body when they get older. Especially if they are thin people. Doctors do not ever think thin people have cardiovascular problems.

(86,612 posts)as my PT told me, by the time I was 35 and have had to continually alter my activities accordingly since. Now facing 60, I have to do numerous stretches and exercises just to get dressed and functional every day. I don't do meds other than IB and the movement. Once I stop moving, I'm done.
How did I use it all up? By throwing 44,000lbs of freight on any given day for 15 years and other bad for my body activities that helped ruin some of my orthopedic anatomy.
RIP, Prince. After watching the incredible moves you had in your shows, I can see how you were in pain after years of doing that.

(86,612 posts)He was so animated and had some of the craziest dance moves and jumping off risers and all that in heels will do you in eventually. Many DUers are aging baby boomers, most of us have had our share of hard work and know what this kind of pain is like.

And while you're at it, maybe you could let us know, in greater detail, your views on addiction.
