I hope it was no one's pet, and was roadkill.
Eagle cam catches cat being fed to eaglets
PITTSBURGH (AP) Cat lovers may be less inclined to view an online livestream of a family of bald eagles in Pittsburgh after the webcam showed two adult eagles feeding a feline to their eaglets.
Viewers on Tuesday saw the adult eagles bring a cat to the nest for the two youngsters.
Some viewers were disturbed that the image was caught on camera, but Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania spokeswoman Rachel Handel tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (http://bit.ly/1XX37oH ) that the feeding behavior was perfectly normal. She also wrote on Facebook that the eagles bring squirrels, rabbits, fish (and other animals) into the next to eat multiple times each day.

(21,506 posts)The idea of a whole bunch of people going from that's so cute to OMG made me giggle
And I love cats. Still, the visual is hilarious.

(56,177 posts)Horrific for the cat, which is not a natural part of any wild animal's diet

(2,710 posts)Eagles are carnivores and carrion birds. It was probably roadkill, which is a natural part of an eagle's diet.

(2,710 posts)It always seems somewhat humiliating to the animal, to be owned.
John James Audubon killed the birds he painted.

My Good Babushka
(2,710 posts)named Henry. He was very possessive and affectionate towards me.
My spouse said that Henry would climb in my mouth someday devour me from the inside, and then he would wear my skin and assume my identity. He died at only seven from kidney problems. He was my best cat. Maybe I don't want another pet because I still miss him. But another part of me says that my children are older now, and I'm tired of small things waking me up too early, and of feeding small things and cleaning up their small feces.
So I hung out a bird feeder and let all the animals belong to themselves.

(3,003 posts)Sure, it's in the cats nature but it's still a horrific end for the mouse amirite?
Mice are a natural part, it's what they were taught to eat...mice are the perfect food for cats, yes it's horrific for the mouse, but the eagles got the cat because of an opportunity, they're not out hunting for cats, they're hunting for rabbits, mice and other rodents, that's the natural part of their diet.
Lancero
(3,003 posts)They're out hunting for small mammals that they can easily carry off. Guess what a cat is?
Are cats their primary source of food? No. But it's not because they don't eat cats as part of their diet. It's because they generally have easier access to the other animals you listed. It's natural for them to go after the easiest prey, but at the same time they will also go after targets of opportunity if they feel a strong need to. And the natural urge to care for their young gives them a strong need to go after those targets of opportunity.
You're correct in saying that cats aren't their main source of food, but you take things a bit far to say that it's unnatural for them to eat cats.

(46,327 posts)I know damn well that cats let outdoors are targets for coyotes, raptors, vehicles, and thoughtless humans like that veterinarian who shot a cat with a bow and arrow.
That's why both my cats are indoor cats.

(10,136 posts)about why he can't go outside after dark: I haven't seen coyotes in the neighborhood, but we do have raccoons and traffic. The local hawks are too small to carry off a full-grown feline, but the crows that are taking over do gang up to drive predators away from their nests (we had a long, loud battle between the crows and a hawk earlier this week - the crows won).

(1,683 posts)For a cat to give a small bird a fatal ending (nice kitty), but a large bird giving a cat a fatal ending is horrible and should not be tolerated?
My view of live cats is that for every cat I see, there is somewhere a violin going unstrung.

I'm certifiably OCD in my reaction to animal suffering and didn't eat meat for 25 years (and only eat free range locally grown meat now), so I can't watch those eagles at all for fear that sooner or later their dinner is going to include little Fluffy or little Rover.

We had a small dog once that I had to fend off a hawk from grabbing her right in front of my eyes.
