Was the Walker election stolen? And would it have made a difference if President Obama had actively supported Democratic challenger Tom Barrett? DAN KAUFMAN writing for The New York Times had this to say about it:

“It was bad enough that Obama or Joe Biden never showed up during the historic protests in February and March of last year,” Matthew Rothschild, the editor of The Progressive magazine, wrote on Monday. “But it is unforgivable that they’ve failed to show up during the last weeks of this crucial recall campaign.” Rothschild went on to remind his readers of a speech that Obama gave in 2007, during his presidential campaign, when he told supporters in South Carolina that if “American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself. I’ll walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States of America.” Whether or not the president’s indifference to Wisconsin’s union struggle will have an impact this November remains to be seen, but for many of those still stinging from last night’s defeat, his silence will be duly remembered.

If this recall election proves a predictor for November, it could be bad news for any Democrats hoping for an Obama “bump” in the polls.
