Social Security releases proposed rule to strip gun rights from some beneficiaries

The Social Security Administration has released the details of how it proposes to identify some recipients for bans on possessing and acquiring firearms.

First broached last July in what the National Rifle Association is calling the “largest gun grab in American history,” President Obama called on the SSA in January to advance a rulemaking process by which certain individuals receiving benefits would be reported to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the database Federal Firearms Licensees use to determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to buy firearms and/or explosives. This would effectively make them a prohibited firearms possessor.

Acting Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin signed the proposed rule, set to be posted to the Federal Register, on April 28.

Included in the 41-page document is the five-step qualification process that will be used to first identify and then report selected Title II and Title XVI beneficiaries to the Department of Justice.

Since persons with mental health disorders are already ineligible to buy firearms, this is merely another reporting channel.

For those not bothering to read the article, I note that the proposal here is simply to add those collecting social security benefits on a claim of mental incapacity would be added to the other reporting channels for mental illness which disqualify persons from buying guns.

The point is that if one has obtained SS disability benefits paid to a custodian due to mental disability, this makes sure they are on the list.

"Those affected would be those who have “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease...”

Because who doesn't want their wacko BIL or their crazy uncle who are so dangerously insane that they spent time locked up in a mental institution and treated against their will, or found mentally defective by a court, to buy guns or toting them around for protection from the space aliens or giant ants out to kill them? Show of hands... volunteer caregivers... gunbearers... or roomies?

Yes, strip those goddamn "gun rights" from the poor mad wretches who missed the last night train back to Realtyville, please!
