Spurred in part by Omaha man's research, Marine Corps launches investigation into iconic Iwo Jima fl

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Marine Corps has launched a review of the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising photo. Omaha amateur historian Eric Krelle said in 2014 that one of the Marines in the photograph had been incorrectly identified by the Corps.

An Omaha amateur historian’s quixotic effort to rewrite the story of one the most famous photos in American history has prompted a reaction — and possibly a correction — from the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps has launched a review of the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising photo, Marine Maj. Clark Carpenter confirmed Friday afternoon, while declining to provide details.

That review is headed by a three-star general and is tasked with examining all elements of the photo, including the identities of the men pictured, according to a source close to the review.

The inquiry could erase and rewrite one of the most hallowed facts of Marine Corps history: the names of the six men long identified as the flag raisers.

They replaced it with a bigger flag, and that's what was photographed.

they replaced the flag, then had all the photogs and cameramen around to capture the event.

that's the very definition of staged.

if it weren't staged, than the original flag raising would have sufficed as the iconic image.

but the original wasn't all that spectacular.

the mission of the U.S. was to win a war, which means feeding the American public all sorts of propaganda, both good and bad.

both real and staged.

this was staged.

on edit: more over, it being released to the public as war propaganda to support the troops only puts a fine point on it.

And its iconification after all these years later, I find it a little odd, that people still even debate this.

And let's face it, do you honestly believe anyone involved would readily admit it was staged?
