Obviously, the really angry, racist asshole wing of the GOP is more powerful this year than the really angry, religious asshole wing of the GOP (disregarding any overlap between the two) so if Trump hadn't been the perfect embodiment of what the GOP had become since a Black man won the presidency, I could see Cruz getting it. And Cruz isn't just your normal conservative Christian nutjob but a Dominionist, whose adherents believe that America should be made into a Christian theocracy. Couple that with the whole, "God told me to run," message, Ted would have been an even bigger nightmare than what you think - unwilling to negotiate or listen to advice because whatever decisions he came to would have, in his mind, the Divine seal of approval. We've seen that attitude in action in the Senate, and how expensive it can be (22 billion in around 2 weeks when he shut down the government). Just think how bad it would have been in an even more powerful position.
And I realize that passions can get heated when it comes to our candidates, but I'm perfectly willing to let Hillary and Bernie continue to slug it out because President Trump is too scary not to put aside any hurt feelings about your guy or gal not winning and vote for the democratic nominee.
