‘Family’ leader vows to never stop hating LGBT people-- Well I vow to never stop standing up to HIM

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/06/06/family-leader-vows-to-never-stop-hating-lgbt-people/

The president of The American Family Association said during his radio show on Tuesday that he views Christianity and homosexuality as so completely incompatible that if he and fellow Christians ever stop hating LGBT people, they just may become the target of similar hatred, or worse.

“Every advance of the homosexual agenda comes at the expense of religious liberty,” Bryan Fischer said on his Focal Points program. “The single greatest threat to religious liberty in America today is the homosexual agenda. We cannot have religious liberty. I would go as far as to say we cannot have homosexuality in the First Amendment. If homosexuality is embraced and normalized, that’s the end of the First Amendment. It’s gone, outta here, shredded. A worthless piece of paper.”

I am a straight woman but I vow to fight for my friends and family in the LGBT community because with religion like his who needs Satan! (No offense meant to those who are religious on this board but I think you can understand where I'm going with this.)

love thy neighbor. Guess that doesn't apply to all people or he doesn't really follow the bible like he says.

5. I don't consider myself sick.

I'm a believer and actually, I think I'm pretty normal.

I don't subscribe to the same type of belief that is discussed in the OP. I believe in God. I don't believe that hatred is what Christianity (or any religion for that matter) should be about, and I certainly don't believe that my religious views should be forced on anyone. I don't believe that homosexuality is a sin and I'm adamantly pro choice.

Like so many things nowadays, though, the radical fundies get all of the headlines.

I merely want to continue to point out on DU that there are Christians who are members of DU who are on the same side as all of the other Democrats. I don't think we (or any other DU members who are religious in whatever capacity they choose) should be ostracized by comments such as yours.

6. Please don't stereotype. There are plenty of "true believers" who are not "sick"

By doing this you are allowing the sick ones to define "true belief".

Everyone loses when you start down that road. Among other things, true believers played a large role in the abolition of slavery, establishment of first class hospitals, establishment of first class schools at all levels, establishment of well run and caring nursing homes, reform of care of the mentally ill, and helping people who slip through the large holes in the "social safety net."

Without hatred, a**holes like him have nothing.

Someone should tell the jerk we already knew that.

4. This is fund raising stuff

They use it to fleece the sheep because it works. If they tried to raise funds to allegedly "help the poor" or "feed the hungry" it would go against their core message of intolerance and self-enrichment.

Close, but not quite. Lemme fix it for you, Bryan: “The single greatest threat to religious liberty in America today are the so-called 'Christians' who know nothing about the life and teachings of Christ, but still attempt to impose their will on the rest of the country..."

There ya go. Much better. No charge.

8. It's starting to feel like the 1930s.

As a gay person, I feel more under attack than before. I think that a lot of Americans are in denial about this, or simply don't recognize what is happening. Here on DU, and out in the real world, I hear people talk about the advances made for gay rights and it sounds like people think that the problem is solved. In fact, I often detect some impatience or condescension - "you have your rights, now stop complaining, and think of people who have less."

In fact, I personally have no more rights now than I had a few years ago. I'm glad that DADT was repealed and I appreciate that that is indeed an advance of rights for some gay people - ones who want to serve in the military - but it doesn't give me any more rights, since I don't serve in the military. Also, the repeal of DADT has done nothing to help the thousands of gay service members who were forced out of the military before the repeal. It's a really good step and I'm grateful, but it doesn't directly provide me or most other gay Americans with more rights.

Likewise, I am grateful that a handful of states have managed to provide the right to equal marriage to gay people, and a few states have managed to provide some rights for domestic partnerships and civil unions. However, the state where I live and work, the state where all my family lives and where I am likely to spend the rest of my life because here is where I have a job, just passed a constitutional amendment against not just equal marriage, but any kind of domestic benefits for gay people. Thirty other states have similar constitutional amendments. Furthermore, the federal Defense of Marriage Act is still in effect, which means that even in the few states that have managed to provide equal marriage rights, married gay couples are denied the more than 1,000 rights provided to heterosexual married couples by the federal government.

Neither the federal government nor the vast majority of states have managed to pass any kind of workplace protection for gay people. We can still be fired from our jobs simply for saying that we are gay.

Meanwhile, I've never heard such openly hateful talk about gay people in my life. Ministers of very large congregations in North Carolina have recently posted videotapes of themselves urging their congregations to break the wrists of four year old boys who seem to be effeminate, beat "the gay" out of their children, and - most notably - round up all gay people and place them in concentration camps behind electric fences until they die. I believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. When I phonebanked against the amendment in my state, several of the people I called were happy to tell me that they hated gay people.

This sounds like Nazi Germany. I think that we should pay attention to this.

14. Can we stop refering to these haters using the word "family"? Even if its in the name of their org
Thu Jun 7, 2012, 03:25 PM
Jun 2012

organization, the mouthbreathing rightwing hatemongers have no more claim to representing the interests of families than anyone else.

The truth is that almost all the LGBT people I know are very family oriented people. And the ones who aren't close with their families have the actions mr Fischer, the AFA, Westboro, and the other hate groups to thank for it.

I'm going to start calling the AFA the "American Fuckhead Association". Hate is not a "family" value.
