I think it boils down to the fact that you cannot logically justify a taxophobic political acumen that scorches social services while building up the military to Cold War levels, puts less money in the hands of the poor while putting even more money in the hands of the obscenely wealthy, sees the middle class as expendable and easily-replaced perpetual victims, writes off blue-collar labor as uneducated complacent relics who refuse to compete, demonizes minorities as "system gaming useless eaters", eliminates unions, strips L/G/B/T/Q/I people of their human rights, wants to control everything about women, shifts risk to the people that are least equipped to deal with it and is perfectly all right with the installation of a plutonomy without sounding like a completely selfish and hateful asshole.

(35,392 posts)I don't believe that tax cuts are the cure-all for the world's ills, that abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor and her personal relationship with God, that abortion is different from the Death Penalty because the Death Penalty IS state initiated (unlike abortion), my marriage has never been threatened by a homosexual (and actually, is more likely to be threatened by a HETEROSEXUAL outsider), and that, if you need an AK-47 and hundreds of guns to shoot a squirrel, your problem isn't with what firearm you're using.

How such a political philosophy can garner you any appreciable amount of voters is beyond my ken.

When presented with facts; cold, hard numbers that cannot be refuted, it is far easier to start yelling gibberish in response as that is easy to do.
Hating the 'Other' is something we as humans have done for, well, since we first walked upright.
And having your betters tell you who to direct your hate at usually works well, keeping the peasants off your back as the real cause of their anger...until it doesn't anymore.
Ask that Louis guy from France how that worked out for him until 21 of January, 1793.
