Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI asked this question once in The DU lounge...but got no reponse....
Why do websites that I visit show up as advertisements on my DU homepage (example: Musicians friend)?
Please keep it simple as I am computer illiterate.

(1,098 posts)Cookies track where you go. Something like Adblock Plus could help you with that.

(1,098 posts)Cookies are basically files on your computer that say "I was here." in regard to the websites you visited. Other websites might look at those cookies and then customize their ads based on them.

(65,616 posts)what is stored on your PC (cookies)...okay that wasn't that short.
Answer, you cannot avoid it...part of the new way marketers get information about you.

(10,164 posts)If you don't like getting targeted ads like that, disabling cookies will eliminate any retargeting/remarketing...which require cookies.
But if you auto-login to sites like this one, that won't work. You'll have to manually type in your user name and password every tome. Auto-login uses cookies, too. Also, while most sites store user preferences on their side of things, some also use cookies to store user preferences like layout, time zone, etc. on the client's computer. You'd have to set those up every time you visit or just accept the defaults.

(10,164 posts)I'm not bothered by retargeting/remarketing, though. If I have to see ads (I don't here: star member), I'd prefer they have at least some chance of being something I'm interested in.
They can seem kinda creepy, though, can't they? A bit stalkery... =)
