DU Poll - Should BSA end its anti-gay policy?

Once bigots always bigots, I guess.

Will the Boy Scouts Reverse Its Anti-Gay Policy?

An outcry over the dismissal of an openly gay den mother has prompted the Scouts to consider ending its contentious membership policy.

UPDATE: In a statement, the Boy Scouts of America has clarified its position on the issue of gay membership. “Contrary to media reports, the Boy Scouts of America has no plans to change its membership policy. The introduction of a resolution does not indicate the organization is “reviewing” a policy or signal a change in direction,” the statement said. The organization’s policy, it reiterated, is: “While the BSA does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA.”

will they? Not for a generation or two.

BTW, your thread header question and poll questions are not the same. Which is why I answered the way I did.

Sure, they should.

The question should be, "Will they?"

My answer to that is not unless SCOTUS forces them to which is very unlikely.

I doubt it. I suspect it will take a SCOTUS decision to get the BSA to change their policy. I do not see them becoming more inclusive willingly.

Will they? No
Should they? Yes

Therefore your poll makes no sense when connected to the headline.

A large number of BSA leaders have been working from inside BSA for a long time to try to get this policy change.

The major stumbling block is that the Mormons have threatened to pull out of BSA and to form their own youth organization if the policy is changed. Mormons only account for less than 5% of the population but LDS units and scouts are 15% to 20% of the units and scouts in BSA.

I had a good time in scouts 50 years ago. The BSA should be better than this.

As well as by other RW Christian religions and RW orgs and politicians.

They also do not allow boys who are atheists to belong.

from the National Eagle Scout Association. I finally sent them an email and told them to take me off their mailing list, I don't support bigoted organizations. I've not heard back from them, I guess they are happy being bigots and don't care what Eagle Scouts have to say.

... and in a car ride he said there is the official position of BSA, but most troop leaders are looking the other way. Somewhat of an informal don't ask, don't tell policy which is impressive for my southern state.

Of course, there are exceptions where zealots are involved.

I have to believe that this will change for the better in the near future.
